I think that it is time to stop the big events( especially the Olympics) if as London is deciding to put missiles on Roof Tops. Our world is getting wonky!
It is a double edged sword indeed. It is sad things have come to this, that anything can be a target for terrorism. Oh and wouldn't the Olympics be a prize! Sad but true.
However by stopping these events we are aslo giving in to terrorism too. They have won. Seems there is no right answer.

Things came to this thousands of years ago. Even in the present situation, moslems have been in the position of fearing terrorist attacks (the use of people in uniforms and with official titles does not make them any less terrorists.)
Anyway, closing the Olympics would make no difference. Closing the olympics has nothing to do with the motives of the terrorists.
Afghanis can cancel all the events they like. NATO will go on bombing them, anyway.

The White House has been defended by ground to air missiles for many years. Ottawa and Montreal were defended by nuclear-armer ground to air missiles from the 1960's to the 1980's. The "hot zone" for the launchers was where my family cottage is. This isn't particularly news.

Well I would hate to have to live where the missiles are placed, especially now that we ALL know where they are. A well planned terrorist attack is going to take them out first wouldn't you think?
The thing that I've noticed about terrorism is that they actually seem to create a focus on something in particular and then strike somewhere else or in an unexpected way.
These land to air missiles being placed on rooftops, are they expecting an air strike? I'm sure the terrorists will fly right over them then.

The world is changing, incredibly quickly...old ways that worked before (tribalism, Stalinism, supply & demand, ....) don't anymore...
all of this reminds me of that movie "Forbidden Planet" where the crewmembers are battling that unstoppable Creature from the Id, a mind-created monster, that is finally stopped by shutting down the machinery of anxiety...

I don't think cancelling major events is the answer. If we cancel things like the Olympics, the terrorists will simply move onto other targets - meetings between political leaders, for example. If we stop doing things out of fear, then the terrorists have won.
Crazyheart - your post reminded me of something. A few years ago Queen Elizabeth came to Victoria and was joined here by Stephen Harper. The festivities all took place on and around the grounds of the Legislature. As my friends and I approached the Legislature buildings, we looked up and on the roof of the adjacent museum we saw a sniper! It was such an odd feeling to look up and see that! Perhaps I should have felt more safe seeing him, but I felt deeply disturbed and uncomfortable.
