news that doesn't get reported.

I received a report to day from a museum I was connected with in Montreal, the Donald Stewart Museum. It is a museum in an old fort. It was founded almost entirely  by English-speaking Quebeckers, supported by them, and still depends heavily on the support of English-speaking Quebeckers.

The report I received was entirely in French. They are not allowed by law to send any communications in English. They must be in French only. The same applies to a wide range of business establishments, even if all the employees and customers are English. (When I last live there, alll English book stores had to label all shelves in French.)

recently, a paramedic was sent to the home of a young girl who was experiencing a seizure. The father could speak French, but wanted to communicate with the paramedic in English to ensure he got all the terms right. The paramedic refused to listen, citing his right to work in French only.

The little girl died. An enquiry cleared the paramedic saying he was quite within his rights to refuse to listen to anything in English. (The paramedic was bilingual).

There has been constant harrasment from both the PQ and the Liberals to downgrade English rights to none at all, to hamper any English organizations - including schools - and to force English to leave the province.

I don't mean that they downplay English needs - as French needs are downplayed in some provinces. I mean a sustained campaign to destroy English institutions, to exclude them from Quebec life, and to drive the English out. This has been going on for thirty years - with scarcely a peep from the rest of Canada.

I live now in New Brunswick where, it is true, there are numbers of English who are bigots. But there is no campaign to chase francophones out. Indeed, the use of the French language is encouraged - and bilingualism is required of all government services.

Quebec had been, since 1800 or so, a hotbed of bigotry and hatred. I really wonder why the rest of Canada doesn't ever seem to give a damn.

Largely because we're f....ing sick of hearing about Quebec? We do hear some of these stories and just shake our heads sadly. What do you want us to do about it? Trying to pressure Quebec into being less bullheaded about it just leads to accusations of, well, bigotry against the French. Politicians in Ottawa won't take them on because it's still one of the largest provinces in terms of ridings so they all have fantasies about using it to get a majority. The Quebecois (esp. the PQ) ignore the constitution except where it suits them to use it so we can't really use that to bring them into line.

Alas, if they were to separate I'm one of the cynical ones who'd be saying "don't let the door hit your arse on the way out."

There is a difference between news that does not get reported and news we missed or news we think is under reported and/or people not caring as much as we do....

I can cite this news item being covered by CTV, National Post, Global, The Globe and Mail, etc.

Did you, by chance, mean the David MacDonald Stewart Museum? I cannot speak on the email you received, but their website offers either French or English.

Did you email them back stating a preference of English and them say they don't, won't can't or are not legally allowed to communicate in English?

 Are are you assuming?

Wow a little girl's life is not as important as the spoiled brat who refuses to speak in English bc the father is under stress and wants to communicate in English. I can't believe how ridiculous this is

It is the Stewart museum. And they know who I am.

It's going to get worse because the PQ has run out of social policies. And they can't call for a separation vote because they know they would lose it. All they can do is to prey on fear and hatred.

Quebec is really wandering in a wilderness. The last federal election in Quebec,  however good it was for the NDP, is a measure of how much Quebec has lost any sense of direction.

And that's dangerous.
