Fave TV shows and why...

Hi... just reading comments about Dancing with the Stars and American Idol and thought I'd love to know what people like to watch, if they watch TV at all...

A few of my favourite shows aren't back on till April but they are:

Glee - it makes me laugh every show and I'm always left humming.  I have season 1 on DVD and will be watching it all again before it starts in a couple of weeks...

Being Erica - I just am intrigued by the idea of having a do-over list and often wonder what mine would be... and I like Dr. Tom... :)

Project Runway - fluffy fun but I seroiusly admire the talent and creativity of the designers and Tim Gunn is lovely.

Nature of Things - I'm a sucker for any kind of nature show - when I was little I used to run around asking when "MutualObamaha" was coming on... Yup, that'd be Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom...  And I love David Suzuki and his passion for the planet.  It's like listening to CBC's Quirks and Quarks... I'm not a science geek AT ALL but I love learning the simple stuff...

Love it or List it (or most home reno shows) I can't watch these all the time cause there are sooo many and I'd end up putting my wee one into full time daycare just to watch them all that would be really not-ok

Greetings!

Friends - I watch the re-runs over and over again, my family can't understand why I watch the same show 10 or 20 times . . . I just love it . . . I always get a laugh, which I understand is good for you, and it brightens my day.

Grey's Anatomy - My family refers to it as a glorified soap opera - I don't care, I like to watch medical shows - I also watch Private Practice and used to watch ER.

Dr. Phil and Oprah - occasionally.

News - CTV and CBC

I like shows/documentaries about real life stories and people.

Hope, peace, joy, love ...

So You Think You Can Dance (and SYTYCD Canada) - dancing, music, costumes, Cat Deeley... what's not to love?!

Seinfeld - I can't get enough of their zany antics.  It doesn't matter how many times I've seen an episode - I'll always watch it again!

Fringe - I haven't seen this in a long time, but was a big fan when it first came out.  Joshua Jackson is lovely (and Canadian).  This show has mystery, drama, thrills, odd-ball comedy, and a lot of crazy science.

Highlander - the whole Immortals who can't die unless you cut off their heads thing fascinated me when the show first came out in the early 90's.  I like the sword fight scenes and I become a serious Methos fan.  Every time I start re-watching the series I wish they'd given him more screen time.

Doctor Who - what can I say I'm a sci-fi junkie.

Being Human - another British sci-fi type series about a ghost, a vampire and a were-wolf trying to lead normal human lives.  It has interesting plot lines and beautiful character development.

Glee - love it, love musicals so it is right up my alley

House - while not any more realistic than any medical show, i love the characters.

Lost - can't wait to see how all the twists work out this final season

The Good Wife - this is a fabulous new show.  Great writing , acting and the story line is full of political intrige, sex, slander and then there are teh law stories too

Flash Forward - have really enjoyed the twists on this although there has been a big break so not sure they will hold the momentum

I am hooked on SYTYCD both US and Canada. They are promoting the art of dance.

Conversely, I feel the underlying theme of Dancing with the Stars is "It's not how gracefully the bear dances, but that it dances at all". Most of the time it is professional dancers towing awkward louts  around the floor.

I couldn't dance to save my life, But I have the good sense not to try.

I don't really follow anything currently in production, but these have been some faves of the past several years...

- "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" -- much hated by many Star Trek fans, this series has the richest characters, the best overriding storylines (most of the other series didn't have overriding storylines, each episode was standalone), the best character development, and a powerful presence of the darker side of humanity.

- "Corner Gas" -- cuz, well, it's Corner Gas.  No explanation needed.

- "Futurama" -- some of the episodes were a little clunky, but there are a number of episodes in which they explore the humanity of the characters and the true depth of love.  Holy crap are those episodes powerful.  The one with Fry's dog and the other one with Fry's brother usually have me tearing up at the end.

- "Delta State" -- a one-season Canadian animated sci-fi series following four young adults with mental powers.  An AMAZING series with a phenomenal story development over the one season.  Sadly, it's almost never on TV anymore.  They released the "first season" on DVD and it TOTALLY sucks!  They really only released the first half of the first season -- and the story goes over the ENTIRE first season -- and as far as I can tell, they're not gonna release the rest on DVD.

- "Charlie Jade" -- only the BEST sci-fi show ever made!  It is so complex and amazing and awesome and dark and compelling and unbelievable that I could never do it justice.  Sadly, it, too, only lasted one season.  However, unlike Delta State, Charlie Jade's entire first season was released on DVD -- just not in Canada!  (And it's a Canadian / South African show!)  I had to order the UK edition and luckily I have a region-free DVD player so I can watch it.

Both Delta State and Charlie Jade are incredibly complex and addictive -- I get sucked into them.  But, even better, tiny clues are dropped along the season, so each rewatch of the series reveals hidden depths of story and character work.  They really truly are amazing -- Canada puts out some phenomenal TV, just no one ever hears of it.

- "Star Trek: The Next Generation" -- much hated initially by many classic series Star Trek fans, this series has the richest characters, the best storylines, the best character development, and a powerful presence of every side of humanity.

Glee, Law and Order, NCIS, all Star Treks except the first, Little Mosque, Doc Zone and I sometimes watch Grey's Anatomy. I did like Weeds for the first few seasons but not so much now...although I haven't seen the most recent ones...

It's fun to watch some of the Star Trek stories that I haven't seen in a long time.  My favourites were in Next Generation and Deep Space 9.

Among new shows, I have been following "Stargate Universe".  I want to find out what happens now that Dr. Rush's treachery has been uncovered and he is stranded on an unknown planet with access to a stargate and a derelict alien spaceship that could be millions of years old.

I enjoy the original "Stargate SG1" stories and they are still entertaining to watch in reruns.

I like nature documentaries, particularly those presented by David Attenborough and David Suzuki.

Sorry, Jae, but you've got them confused.

Next Gen is the worn out and second-most-boring series.  Deep Space Nine is tops!

Mendalla's picture

Mythbusters - just enough science to qualify as educational, but more entertaining than a lot of scripted TV.

Star Trek - no subtitle, just Bill Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and Deforest Kelley "boldy going where no man has gone before". Also liked seasons 3-6 of Next Gen (first couple were uneven, last seemed a bit worn out) and the Dominion War seasons of DS9.

Doctor Who - haven't seen much new Who, but a big fan of the classic series, esp. the third and fourth Doctor (Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker).

Monty Python's Flying Circus - this comedy is not dead, it's just pining for the fjords!

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - short but entertaining TV series based on the first novel and the original radio series.

Cheers - probably my favorite American sitcom, esp. during the Shelley Long seasons

I only watch tv at work these days.  I used to be addicted to Star Trek Voyager --- have seen them all more than once, and Trailer Park Boys -- ditto.

I have watched the first two seasons of Mad Men on dvd.

Other shows I like are Mythbusters, Survivorman, and Hoarders (horrifying and fascinating).  I used to get sucked into odd things like At the End of My Leash, and I'm not even a dog person.

It's not unheard of for me to occasionally tune into The Simpsons (since it's always on), and Jeopardy  to answer the questions.

Grey's Anatomy - I fell in love with it when it first started.  It had started to go downhill, but not enough to get me to stop watching it.  Lately, it's picked up again and I hope it stays this way!  (No more Izzy and dead Denny, that was just too odd!)  I'll also watch Private Practice, but I'm not as dedicated too it (although for a while I thought it was going to replace GA when it was going downhill).

Glee - Cuz it's glee.  'Nuff said

18 to life - I had heard about it before it aired, forgot, then when I realized part-way through the show what it was I agreed - it isn't just good Canadian TV, it's a good show overall.  It's also a show that can be picked up anytime and you're not feeling like you're missing something.  It's nice to know if I miss a week I can watch the next without a problem.

Other shows that I'll watch if they are on (and my fiance likes too) Mythbusters, Mantracker, TMZ.  He thought he would hate TMZ, but I convinced him to watch it once and he got all into it.  For us, its not the celebs, it's the silly comments made by Harvey and the gang.

Wow, I'm with a lot of people here. I like all the Star Treks as well as Dr. Who, both the current run and the original. I also really like Torchwood, which no one has mentioned. I also really like Grey's Anatomy. That's about the only regular network show I'm keeping up with now. I also like Desperate Housewives and I love Smallville, but I won't see them until they're out on Netflix. I like TrueBlood and Secret diary of a call girl as well. There's other things as well (Monty Python, Sliders, even Sledge Hammer) that are from years ago but I think I named the biggies. Also The Office, and recently I've gotten into 30Rock.

I should have mentioned NCIS, how can one not love Mark Harmon!

And I have started watching Say Yes to the Dress, when my 19 year old daughter is home.

I consider it a bit of "training", in the line of   "can you believe someone would pay $7000 for a dress!"

Mark Harmon has aged beautifully!  Discovery and discovery civilization hook me up to T.V. far more than I should, but I can't get enough.  Other than that I like comedy shows or House.  Home and Garden channel is on so often that farmboy was shocked that he new one of the decorator's names.  He quickly ran away to do something manly outside

I probably should do something more constructive while I'm waiting for gardening/fishing weather...oh, gotta run Carter Can is on!

Little Mosque on the Prairie

First, it's Canadian.  Second, they don't rely on that stupid laugh track.  Multiculturalism comes to a small prairie town.  It's about everyday conflict situations which is one of the secrets of any successful sitcom.  The cast are fantastic, especially Manoj Sood who plays the part of Baber Siddiqui.  The new Anglican priest character keeps the conflict active.  It exposes some of the myths of Muslims in general (i.e., terrorism, etc).  (Actually, I think the Anglican priest must have graduated from Trinity in Toronto LOL).  They did mention Timothy Eaton Church once implying it was an Anglican church.  They mentioned the United Church a few seasons ago mentioning that a organist who made marijuana brownies for the church is now playing for the United Church.  That was hilarious.

Star Trek Next Gen: grew up with the show, from ages 13 to 20. It shaped my life. Dealt with so many life issues, and philosopphical questions. My fave episodes are the time related ones, and all Q's episodes. Tapestry, Cause and Effect, Where No One Has Gone Before...

Northern Exposure:  deep questions about life answered with humour. I learned a lot, laughed a lot and cried too. The characters were like real friends. It was also filmed not far from where I lived, 4 or 5 hr drive. I went there 3 times.

Dr. Who.: Best thing on telly since Star Trek and Northern. Funny, inspiring, exciting, emotional. Great stories, excellent casting, excellent costume and sets and special effects. A rollercoaster ride of a show.

Twilight Zone: Cool, cool show that's been on for like forever. I love the old b&w episodes, the 80's/90's episodes, and now I've bought a box set of new episodes from the 2000's and am really enjoying those. Allways deep, usually learn something. Excelent "Whoa!" factor.

Xena, Warrior Princess: costume by Ngila Dickinson who did LOTR, deep, funny, inspiring, and the girls kick bad guy ass. I love the colour, the stories, the locations, the music.

Also used to watch a lot of Cheers (both women) and love Monty Python!

Being Human sounds interesting Rowan.

We keep score when we play which means you have to be really fast to yell out the answer and sometimes hae to be quick on the pause button so you don't hear the answer.  Actually makes it fun.

And yes ABPenyy,   man Mark Harmon is gorgeous, better than when he was 30 I think.

My fave shows would have to be....

(not in order)

1) The Venture Bros. - I really love the jokes and voice acting

2) The Office (American version) - Aside from the fact that it's crazy funny, I'm a fool for love and the romance between Jim and Pam is addorable :3

I'll edit if I think of other shows later, I'm sleepy atm though, might take a nap.

I find it really interesting that there seems to be a large body of WC'ers (my take through this and other comments on threads) that are Sci-Fi'ers/Trekies/Fantasy and it just made me wonder if the appeal of such shows - which often do seem to explore (literally and figuratively) big questions or black holes :)  is the same for people seeking answers or direction or willing to sit in the unknown of faith and spirituality?

Dr Who and Torchwood are the only show that I follow on commercial TV anymore.  I heard that the next season of Dr Who is going to be in HD and I have an HD monitor but I don't have an HD TV so I might have to download this season.  I love the old and new Dr's but I like the new one better because it seems to delve into the Doctor's relationships more and what it is like to be him.

I watch Big Love and True Blood on HBO on demand.  I find that I just don't have the patience for having to be in front of the TV at a certian time and sit through commercials anymore.  Especially since there seem to be so many show on now that I have to watch every single episode in order to follow what is going on.

My favorite shows that aren't on anymore would be OZ , Northern Exposure and News Radio.

Rowan's picture

Another couple of good shows are Blood Ties (I hate the way they ended the show with a cliffhanger, pretty obvious that there was meant to be at least 1 more season) and Queen of Swords (that one more for the fact that Peter Wingfield is in it that anything).  I also enjoyed Forever Knight.

One thing I have noticed about the British SF shows (Torchwood, Dr Who, Being Human) are that they tend to be rather darker than the American shows like Star Trek.  In American TV a happy ending tends to run to the tune of  "and all the good guy main charaters live happily ever after".  In British TV that is by no means a forgone conclusion, having everybody live is more the exception than the rule.

I'm not really into British sci-fi -- but I'm really into the rare cases of Canadian sci-fi because it tends to be similar in style to the British.

That's what I love about Delta State and Charlie Jade -- the two series I mentioned above -- you have absolutely no idea what's going to happen since nothing and nobody is safe.  Delta State is aimed at a younger audience, so there really isn't any death but there is betrayal, secrets, and switching of allegiances.  With Charlie Jade, though, there are characters that you think are major and then they die on ya!  Plus there's so many changes in the characters that you really can't assume anything about them.

gaiagrrl - I fully agree - Being Erica is terrific.

I've gotten into watching The Big Bang Theory (mondays at 9:30pm where I live) - great intro music by The Bare Naked Ladies!   Hilarious moments with a group of computer nerdie guys with lots of great characteristics and varyng degrees of social ineptitude, one of whom is likely on the autism spectrum,  and a neighbouring regular girl (girlfriend to one).  She's kinda their touchstone to the 'real' world.

Have to admit to being a CSI fan - but only the Las Vegas version - I do miss Grissom though.

I'm an occasional watcher of Gray's Anatomy (do you know that's the name of classic anatomy text used everywhere? - trivia for you Jeopardy fans!)  Working in a hospital, I can assure you, this is pretty clearly mostly fiction!!   I miss ER - used to watch that very regularly!  And before that, St. Elsewhere.

Used to love Northern Exposure too!  Made me laugh, and think.

And of course - The Passionate Eye - CBC documentary show - amazing stuff.

Ok, favourite shows.

I'm in full agreement with Big Bang Theory -- it is a hit with me, and my boys...did you know that they actually hire physicists to work some of the equations you see on the boards in their room.  Did you know that Chuck Lorre also was creator of Grace under Fire, cybill, Two & a half men, Dharma & Greg..

i also liked Robson Arms? which was a quirky Canadian comedy.  Glee -- though..has had quality consistency issues for me. The other quirky one  was the one where the young teenage woman talks to God who appears everywhere and she ends up following God's odd directions, and in that way alters what could have happened , and for the life of me, can't remember the name of it...and of course, Northern Exposure...ok..Chris..was to die for.

I like some of the odder shows out there such as  True Blood and most recently i was introduced to the Altered States of Tara

I will generally watch a few of the crime-drama, and like Canadian ones --  The Border, Flashpoint, and really liked Davinci's Inquest, Cold Case?.

i  liked CSI, Criminal Minds, etc, in their first year. along with  House, Gray's Anatomy  also, but, I get frustrated when the quality drops from the early shows...ER St. Elsewhere's were multiple year favourites..

I like "so you think you can dance" but don't watch it much..and got frustrated by American Idol due to scripting, but I like the concept.

I admit to being a long-time Coronation Street junkie, which is much about being able to talk to it wiht my mom, and other friends as it is the show.  Thank goodness for PVR.

I missed Jeopardy.  We watch it together most nights.

I am currently in a space where I have the time to watch a lot of TV. I often watch a few shows during the day, including ones that I have recorded in the evenings due to family time or they come on too late.

I enjoy watching a number of shows on HGTV like House Hunters, HH International; Location, Location, Location (house hunting in the UK), also sometimes the home renos shows and on the Food Network I have enjoyed Top Chef series and sometimes watch Iron Chef.

mystchild doesn’t watch a lot of TV with me/us but shows we have occasionally enjoyed watching together include Green Homes, Extreme Homes, Iron Chef , Mythbusters and Daily Planet.

Our family loved watching Corner Gas together – love the quirky characters and setting, and have just started watching Hiccups and Dan for Mayor – I’m not  totally convinced with either (although I do enjoy Brent Butt and Nancy Robertson in action again), but mystchild is enjoying them and gives us something to watch together.

I enjoy Lie to Me (new last fall, neat stuff analyzing people’s truthfulness – or not - with facial expressions, movements etc);  NCIS (love ‘most’ of  the characters);  CSI original and New York – sometimes have to cover my eyes and really not sure why I watch it, but do enjoy the ‘science’ of those shows;  The Good Wife;  Being EricaLaw and Order: SVU (find it too upsetting and gross often, but have a crush on Mariska Hargitay …. what can I say). My partner and I used to enjoy watching The Closer on Friday nights, quirky female police chief in LA (originally from southern US - accent and all)  – hasn’t been around this year - hope it comes back.

No sci-fi for me ……

It's in summer reruns now.  It plays on Monday nights on CBC.  It's about a muslim group who rent the basement of an Anglican church much to the dismay of their new priest who is trying to get them out of there.  They don't poke fun at any religion but explore some of the misunderstandings people can have and suspicions about new groups.  The only Muslim in the cast is the actor who plays the young Imam as a former corporate lawyer turned Imam.  Great acting.

Caprica, It has just started. It's a prequel to BattleStar Gallactica, and it is address many of the issues we deal with here on wondercafe right now.

Does God exist, Is there more than one God, religious terrorism, what religious beliefs are valid? virtual communities, sockpuppets,  addictions and mental health.

What is real life and what is not/? Do our actions in virtual communities affect or change who we are? toxic moms, humanities treatment of the other, racism. Captialism, and instramental reasoning, sex,  and violence.  Secrets and lies and how they affect people.

Get this one of the main characters is a gay hitman for the mob.Last weeks episode was a little too dark for me. the gay hitmans brother was looking for his dead daughters avatar in a virtual game. He was unable to do so because he was unable to kill virtual avatars in the game,  So he asked his brother how he killed, and his brother said  that when he killed real people, he was only able too because he pretended it was a game when he did.
