"Take it on Faith" - Matt Mays
Apparently, Matt's been around the Canadian music scene for a while but I'd never heard of him until this song went into heavy rotation on CBC 2.
"Out of the Game" - Rufus Wainwright
For some reason, I've found it hard to get into Rufus even though, on paper, he's an artist I should love. This is the title track of the album that may change that.
"Skyfall" - Adele
I like what I've heard of Adele though I wouldn't call myself a big fan. However, the decision to let her do the next Bond theme is an inspired one. This is the 50th anniversary of the franchise and she's given them an old-style song in the vein of the ones John Barry wrote for singers like Shirley Bassey back in the sixties and seventies.
Mendalla
And PS. I'm quite unapologetic about being a Bond fan. Yes, the series has it's flaws on a philosophical level but damn it, I so want to drive around in an Aston Martin saving the world and getting hot chicks.

Out Like a Lion - Whitehorse
Husband-wife duo Luke Doucet and Melissa McLelland perform under the collective name Whitehorse and they are great. This is the new single from their second album under the Whitehorse name (though both worked on each other's solo projects before creating Whitehorse). Not only are they great singer-songwriters, they're also such a cute couple.

I recently tripped across this band, Over the Rhine--apparently popular in 'progressive' Christian circles but don't box themselves into the Christian genre. A few of their songs are stuck in my head, in a good way.
Here's a link to their site. On the bottom left of the home page there's a "record player" button where you can listen to several streaming songs if you're interested.
I checked out some of their past music as well, and they have a range of style.

Sounds like Mumford & Sons. After their big break a couple years back, the contemporary Christian music scene tried to claim them. They do have some Christian ideas and allusions in their songs (heck, one of their hits is called "Roll Away the Stone"). Marcus Mumford himself, IIRC, played it down saying Christian ideas inevitably show up in their lyrics because they are practicing Christians, but that being a niche "Christian band" isn't their goal. Which is, IMHO, how it should be. A good "Christian band" should be a good band period, esp. if their goal is to get the non-Christian community interested in their ideas.
And here's Mumford & Sons in action with the first single from their most recent album:

Bump. Some songs currently or recently on the CBC Radio 2 Top Twenty that have caught my fancy.
Jason Rutledge's "Out of the Woods":
Jenn Grant, "I've Got Your Fire"
And it's a bit old now, but Serena Ryder's "Stompa" was one of CBC 2's top played songs for the first couples months of this year. Not sure I like her current direction as much as her older, bluesy, folksy rock but it's still a great track.

Remember the five people playing one guitar version of Gotye's "Somebody that I used to know"? The band that did that is Burlington, Ontario's Walk Off the Earth and they subsequently put out an album of their original material. And it's good. Live performance of the first single from CBC.
Okay, did I miss a memo from Aaron or something? I just pasted the Youtube Share link and it's embedded. Have they changed/fixed video embedding on WC?

I'll add that if you like a mix of interesting performances, the CBC Radio Music channel on Youtube is great. A lot of the music I've been posting recently comes from it. They've had pop, rock, blues, jazz and classical.
Some recent cool bits:
- Chanteuse Jill Barber singing a tribute to Hank Williams. She's not country (more jazz-pop) but her interpretations sound wonderful.
- Saskatchewan band The Sheepdogs visit to Sun Records, the legendary studio where Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, and others recorded in the fifties. They covered 3 Elvis songs and also recorded two of their own songs.

I've been enjoying Walk off the Earth as well. That Red Hands single has been getting some airplay, and it's quite good. Here's their video for Red Hands, and another video explaining how they made the video:
They have some more covers that are actually way better than they artists they're covering. Here are the best two. If language bothers you, avoid "Payphone".

Erland and the Carnival for y'all. A slideshow I made. The album came out in 2011, but is still pretty recent to me. I love the whole album. Neo British folk-pop.
I'm loving Gotye a lot. Have two albums and eager to get hold of the other two, though they are quite pricey still.

I got Muse's latest album for xmas, and this is my favourite track from it. "A species set on endless growth is unsustainable":
...followed by this one, because it sounds so INXSey and Queeney and Stevie Wonderey (watch out for the F word though, not so good with kids in the house):
also an undeniable U2eyness about this song (and especially the video), as there is on other songs on the album. It's a shameless rip off of all their influences, is the album. I might have done better to get an earlier one. The video is extremely cheesy and bombastic!

Interesting article Inanna about music and neurology. If I had life to do over again, maybe I'd go into neurology.
Here's a current group I'm really loving. Midlake. And a video from their 2010 album, "The Courage of Others" which is their most recent so far as I'm aware, and a gorgeous, gorgeous album, with a gorgeous cover. The sound makes me feel homey.

That Eric Whitacre is really something. All those people alone, yet united. It reminds me of the scene in DOctor who , Gridlock, at the end where they all fly up toward the light, and how they had sung their hymn together all separated in their cars.
It's like the whole planet is singing.

I love that song. Indeed, I love Dido in general. She's another one of those artists who takes her time putting an album together (hers are usually five years apart) and the results are usually beautiful.
I'm currently getting very enamoured of The Lumineers, another folk-pop group in the vein of Mumford and Sons.
The live video for "Ho Hey" is a fresh one, just recorded at Coachella on April 14.

Been listening to Walk Off the Earth's (see post upthread) album REVO in the car this week. It is good. Heavily, but not entirely, acoustic but not neo-folk like Lumineers or Mumfords. Very much straight up pop-rock. Here's the title track to listen to:
And "Summer Vibe", featuring the lovely Sarah Blackwood on lead vocals.
Favorite recent song right now is "Montreal" by Raine Maida, lead singer of Our Lady Peace and husband/writing partner of Chantal Kreviazuk.

I won't post it, just link to it, but David Bowie is back in full-on shock mode with his new video, The Next Day. If graphic imagery or potentially blasphemous religious themes bother you, I suggest giving it a pass. The song is, like the rest of the new album, vintage Bowie and I'm so glad he's back and in fine form.

Speaking of David Bowie, Chris Hadfield's final music video from space is a riff on Bowie's classic "Space Oddity" with new lyrics about his own return to Earth (which happens today).
One of Hadfield's ground-based collaborators on the recording is singer-songwriter Emm Gryner. Here's a live performance of one of my favorite Emm Gryner songs. Lovely lady with a lovely voice and a terrific songwriter to boot.

Apparently this song has topped charts all over Europe and is rising fast here. It's "Let Her Go" by Passenger.
Of Monster and Men is another great new band in the neo-folk vein of Lumineers and Mumford & Sons. "King and Lionheart" is a beautiful, evocative song and the mini-movie video with it's weird riff on steampunk is also beautiful and evocative, if rather dark. Perhaps there will be a sequel that will lighten things up. I've also included a live version from last weekend's CBC Music Festival in Toronto.

Yep, they're covering Madonna. And I love their version of the song, though Madonna's Marilyn Monroe inspired video for the original version remains one of my favorite Madonna videos.
Sarah looks like she was getting pretty close to her due date when they shot it, too (they announced her pregnancy in video on the their Youtube channel in January). Rather brave to be bouncing around like that with the "newest band member" on board.

I loved that Mendalla! Great to see a preggers woman in video too! Wish I was a singer. I have a cousin who sings and is going to be performing that song with her group, pink dresses and all. Awesome.
Did you film them Inanna? I'd have stopped too. Coo-el. They're pretty good. They seem to be gathering a fair few coins too. I wonder if the better you are, the more money ou make busking, or if it's all about people seing other people dropping in money... I saw violinists in Manchester busking and they were virtually ignored. I guess how good you are is largely about how much you feel it, and having the lack of inhibition to perform it.

Any other fans of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings here? I love this band. It's a supergroup, to be sure, with Stephen Fearing, Colin Linden, and Tom Wilson all well-established before they founded the Kings. But somehow, even with each of them being highly talented, the whole manages to be more than the sum of its parts.
Anyhow, their album "Kings and Queens" probably stretches the definition of recent (it's a couple years old now) but I'm listening to it in the car these days and it is wonderful. The band recorded it in Nashville and features their favorite female voices (the "Queens" of the title) from a variety of musical styles. Emmylou Harris, Pam Tillis, Patti Scialfa, Holly Cole, and Serena Ryder are just a few of the "Queens". Here's Ryder's contribution featuring her trading vocals with Fearing.
And Lucinda Williams joins the band for "If I can't have you", a great country-rock tune if there ever was one:
