A thought, and I hope enough play along to make it worthwhile. Valentine's Day is coming up in 3 weeks. How about we play, "choose the Official Wondercafe Valentine's Day Song"? Pick your 3 favorite love songs (irrespective of genre, if someone wants to list opera arias or cynical songs about broken hearts, go for it) and list them in rank order (ie. first, second, third). I'll keep track and the top-rated song will be named the WC Valentine Song. Advocating for your own songs is allowed, but, please, no dissing others' choices (or at least keep it to witty, light-hearted dissing).
For each song named, I'll award 4 points for each 1st place vote, 2 points for each 2nd place vote, and 1 point for each 3rd place vote, then total and tabulate scores on the 14th (so votes need to be in by midnight on February 14th). I'll do the scoring in Excel on MS Office Live (the free, online version of Office) so I can share it with anyone who want to audit the results. The high point value for 1st place is to keep 1st place important by minimizing the chance of a song with a load of second place votes winning.
I'll post my list later (don't want to influence the early voting ).
If we get <10 votes, I'll probably call it off for lack of interest but hopefully we can get something going here.

Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers
Ghost by Ingrid Michaelson
Haunted- Shane McGowan and the Popes with Sinead O'Connor

"...........I love you in a place where there's no space or time
I love you for my life, 'cause you're a friend of mine
And when my life is over, remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singin' my song for you......"
Also:
Home is where I want to be
Pick me up and turn me round
I feel numb - burn with a weak heart
(So I) guess I must be having fun
The less we say about it the better
Make it up as we go along
Feet on the ground
Head in the sky
It's ok I know nothing's wrong . . nothing
Hi yo I got plenty of time
Hi yo you got light in your eyes
And you're standing here beside me
I love the passing of time
Never for money
Always for love
Cover up say goodnight . . . say goodnight
Home - is where I want to be
But I guess I'm already there
I come home she lifted up her wings
Guess that this must be the place
I can't tell one from another
Did I find you, or you find me?
There was a time Before we were born
If someone asks, this where I'll be . . . where I'll be
Hi yo We drift in and out
Hi yo sing into my mouth
Out of all tose kinds of people
You got a face with a view
I'm just an animal looking for a home
Share the same space for a minute or two
And you love me till my heart stops
Love me till I'm dead
Eyes that light up, eyes look through you
Cover up the blank spots
Hit me on the head Ah ooh

Hi Mendalla,
Top 3 Love Songs are:
Love--Petra
Somebody to Love--Queen
Since You Been Gone--Weird Al Yankovic (this one is easily the silliest).
Grace and peace to you.

Very cool!
Another song that I think is a love song is Bare Naked Ladies, Tonite is the Night I Fell Asleep at the Wheel.
She's the last thing on his mind.

Gee, my favorite love songs!?! That's a tall order!
Here's some that I like a lot, and think are really romantic, and deserve to win, as my submissions:
1. I had the Craziest Dream ~ Helen Forrest
2. Love Me Tender ~ Elvis
3. Chances Are ~ Johnny Mathis

There's a lot of really good love songs (and a lot more really cheesy ones) but here are the three I am going to go with:
1) Everything I do, I do it for You - Bryan Adams
2) Unchained Melody - The Righteous Brothers
3) Unforgettable - Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole (although the original, solo version is also excellent).

Unforgettable is lovely. I can't recall Unchanied Melody by name I need to look it up. SPent all yesterday eveing listenign to love songs... Sadly there's many I don't have I'd like to play... I'm sure there's one by ol' Bing I might choose. Moonlight something...
I thought of At Last too. It's a great song. And I had Hold Me by Fleetwood Mac on my shortlist...
Nothing Compares 2U is nice too. Did anyone else ever sing it? You know it was written by Prince eh? Hmmm....
The Love Cats was very tempting.. Soooo cute.

The only version I've heard besides Sinead's is one by Prince. Not sure which one I like better, actually. I'm not a huge Prince fan normally, but he sings this one pretty well.

Dolly Parton song "I will always Love You" A bitter sweet love song about leaving someone you still love. It's also a country hit, made into a bigger hit twenty or so years later my Whitney Houstan. Howevr my favorite version is by Lin Yu Chun and he was a contestant on a Taiwanes reality show. It's just so wrong, yet so right in so many ways.
Second would be Celine Dion;'s My Love Will Go On.
and third Debbie Boone's "You Light up My my Life"
You said "silly" love songs right!

Mendalla, Hmm, I'll have to look that up. I like most of his 80's hits, though he is pretty sleezy. Mom was so worried that would be the direction I would go!

Here's a live performance from Ellen, Elanor. Blusier than Sinead's:

Been thinking about my list.
1. Unforgettable - Nat King Cole
Wonderful song. We had it as the first "dance" at our reception (weren't many people so it wasn't much of a dance, more just music to enjoy after dinner). I prefer the original Cole solo more than the posthumous duet version.
2. Last Night on Earth - Green Day
I'm currently quite enamoured of this song by Green Day, esp. the version from the musical American Idiot where it's sung as a duet by a couple. Version below is a performance by the original cast. It's hardly Green Day's best work, but it's a rare love ballad from a band that is usually a bit on the cynical side.
3. Dance Me to the End of Love - Leonard Cohen
Love and lust lie at the heart of much of Cohen's work, but this one seems more "Valentine-y" than most. There are many versions of the song, but I like Madeleine Peyroux's handling of it.

I'd would like to make a second set of nominations. My first one stressed mostly "the silly love song:" part of the contest. This one is less silly and more geared to Wondercafe theme love song
Number 3 is Bryan Adam's Heaven
http://youtu.be/Z7b37l_B4vI
Number Two is from Rent. Jonathan Larson's Light My Candle
And for number 1 from one of the most well known composer of love songs, Burt Bacharach. I say a Little Prayer for You.
Bacharach wrote so many great love songs that I thought instaed of putting up a clip of just "I say a Littlle Prayer" O would put up a great melady sung by Dionne Warwick of several of his love songs, including "I say a Little Prayer for You?

AND THESE are the words of a love poem or song recorded in a Scottish chapbook of the mid-19th century... HONEST!
A Choice Duck
In, Five New Songs. Falkirk, printed by T. Johnston. (Glasgow University catalogue no.: GUL. Bh13-d.25)
Charming Poll, oh, hear me raving,
Why did you bolt the kitchen door?
’Tis you alone can stay my craving.
Let me in I ask no more.
I long for duck fat, fair and tender,
Now on the spit I smell the roast;
But not the duck: — sweet Poll, surrender
Yourself, the duck that I prize most.
Dear duck, could I but have the luck in,
All plump and feathered to my taste,
I would, from greasy kitchen plucking,
Save my duck from further waste;
But if I crave for duck much longer,
While thus a tender duck I seek,
My duck, I doubt, won’t grow much younger,
Whilst I, in stomach, grow more weak.
Though duck be dear, expensive feeding,
Sweet duck, on you I fix my heart,
Would have, (no cost of dressing heeding,)
My duck well drest in every part.
Dear duck, though more like full fat wether,
Were leg, and wing and all but mine,
Why duck would have, in every feather
A joint, on which my taste could dine.
------
So sweet ladies... how many of you are aswoon? Don't be shy! Own up!

I would prefer Unforgettable, the original version. I would like Unchained Melody better as a song if not for associations that prevent me. It is very nicely sung and heartfelt.
Nobody else for Elvis???
