Songs that could be hymns/anthems ... but aren't

Ever come across songs that just seem like they would be a good hymn or anthem, at least for special occasions or themes? Happens to me occasionally.

One that I actually have heard done is "Rise Again". It's best known from the Rankin Family version but it's actually older than that versioin (Cookie Rankin actually recorded the original version for a show of Cape Breton music). First Unitarian of Hamilton had their choir sing it as an anthem for a child dedication many years ago when I was going there. To make my point, here it is sung in a church by a choir.

In my thread on musical meditations, gecko46 mentioned "Long Long Journey" by Enya. It's a song by her that I'm wasn't familiar with but after listening to it, I so want it sung in church as a hymn or anthem but will likely just file it away as a possible Musical Reflection for some thematically suitable service since I'm not that musical.

Okay, why can't they just block embedding instead of telling you after you've embedded it that you can't show it on your site. For the second one, you have to click on it and view it on Youtube.

I used to be a part of a youth and young adult music group in my church. At one point, we were called, "Definitely Not the Sanctuary Choir" - lol! We performed a mixture of Christian and secular music both during the service and at other church functions. I remember singing Rise Again at our minister's engagement party, but I don't think we ever did it in church.

Some highlights of the songs we sang in church (all of which, I feel, could be good anthems or hymns) include:

Another couple of songs that we didn't perform, but feel would fit the bill exceptionally well (one of which I have shared on Wondercafe before):

and this one, which can't be embedded:

As a huge Enya fan, Mendalla, I think many of her songs are worthy of being called hymns for their spiritual qualities.

This is one of my favourites:

We have sung the Rose we are practicing prince of Egypt right now and boy are we having prblems with the Hebrew parts. Another one we recently sang was you Raise me Up  as for Hallelujah we used the music and put our own words into it to record our jjourney from the old building to the one we are in now.

I like "I want Tomorrow" by Enya as an anthem sort of thing, for reclaiming one's ancestry and heritage, and keeping it alive.

I also really like "Let it Go" by Luba as an anthem for being true to ones self, and siezing your personal power and freedom.

I just heard a song the other day, not sure when it came out, but it seemed suitable for a hymn.

Waterfall - that song is one of my favourites. There's a beautiful video for it too that you can see if you go here: http://www.thefield.ca/content/directors/malandruccolo/today-im-gonna-try-and-change-the-world.shtml.

Being Pagan my idea of hymns/ spiritual music probably differes a bit from what a lot of you would view as such.

A few of my favorites:

*Chevaliers de Sangreal (Robert Langdon's theme from Angels & Demons / The Da Vinci Code)

*The First Of Autumn (Enya)

*The Celts (Enya)

* Book of Days (Enya)

* Dante's Prayer (Loreena McKennitt)

*The Old Ways (Loreena McKennitt)

*Dark Night of the Soul (Loreena McKennitt)

*Baba Yetu (Christopher TIn - From game Civilzation)

yes

One of my all-time favorite pieces of soundtrack music from any source (movies, tv, games) and a setting of the Lord's Prayer in Swahili to boot, so well-suited to being an anthem.

I suppose Baba Yetu actually is a hymn but I didn't know that until ages after I first heard it.  I initally thought the words were just nonsensical sounds.

Yeah, it wasn't until my son and I got curious and found a thread about it on the Civ forums that we found out what the words were.

Well, if we're talking spiritual songs rather than hymns or anthems, which I think are all pretty different categories... I could add one or two spiritual songs...
