I read it a couple years ago. Pretty big book. It was like reading "Shogun", I felt married to it by the time I finished.
I thought it was quite brilliant. Very multi-layerd plot. A sad ending.
I really enjoy books set in the middle east. Everyone has read the "Kite Runner" but has anyone read "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by the same author? Amazing book. All those kinds of books really broaden a person's understanding of their fellow man. And "A fine balance" by Rohinton Mistry is brilliant too.

i'm kind of torn about the ending, myself... on one hand, its so very sad that lata didn't choose kabir, however she had a VERY interesting insight at one point, where she said that whenever she was around him, she lost herself - that she didn't know how or what to feel. and then again, it was kind of like the passion and romance in her life ENDED when she made the choice to marry haresh, and she just accepted it as part of her journey and moved on.
i'm torn, really... we in the west consider love to be the basis for our relationships, however lata never knew that kind of thing, she only knew family. did she really mourn the loss of kabir as much as i did?? and then again, how many marriages in society today happen out of a sense of 'duty' - whether it be because of a pregnancy, expectations for the future, etc??

very insightful.
Same sort of topic but different: I know a girl who said she would be HONORED if her father picked a husband for her. She is a Christian, and Canadian. She obvioiusly holds her dad in the highest regard to trust him with such a thing as to find her a man of honor and integrity and that he knew could make his daughter happy.
