The Waters of Mars

"Who needs atom clamps?  I've got a funny robot."  One of the best lines on TV ever.

Did anyone watch the new Dr Who special on Space Saturday or Sunday?  Wow, what happened there at the end?  Time Lord victorious?  What is the Doctor going to to with that new attitude?  Is he going to go back in time and try to save the Time Lords or has he been scared off?  The Master is coming back for the Christmas special, how is that going to work?  Also I heard a rumor that the upcoming season is called Season 1.  What's that about?  My nephew thinks that the new season is going to be a prequel.  My brother thinks that the final demise of the Doctor is approaching.

"He is coming through the darkness.  He will knock four times."

Not only is the Master coming back, but Donna, or Doctor Donna is coming back. Perhaps the new Doctor will come from a regenerated Donna.

What about the Od? Are they the new spiritual symbol on Dr Who? At first they appeared to be mindless idiots. Now they seem to have a `deep`connection with space.time.

Did you catch the part at the end where Averi shoots herself, in order to subvert the Dr. I had to watch the end twice to get it.

I didn't see the special, but I read an article this weekend that our dear Doctor (Tennant) is going to change again... some actor Matthew something??

Interesting that Donna is back and the Master too, but these sci fi show can regenerate anyone.

Elanorgold,

If you want the 'Full Effect', I suggest you start with "Utopia", then watch "The Sound of Drums" then "Last of the Time Lords" then "Planet of the Dead" then "Waters of Mars" then "The End of Time"

Some of these I have watched on Youtube.  Some don't seem to be available on Youtube anymore, at this time;  but I'm sure they'll keep popping up as scmart people keep on uploading them.  Speak of the devil, there Waters of Mars is!

Some random Dr Who surfing has brought up this, Dr Who episodes to Abba songs:

I watched the Last of the Time Lords on Youtube, at last, after missing it on CBC in out old house, when it aired...  It took all day to load up, and in 21 separate windows so I could watch them consecutively (2 minuite segments!) slowing the computer down to nearly a standstil. The episode was very good! Very thought provoking!

I bought Planet of the Dead, and saw the first two on tv and have them on tape and watch them from time to time. Think I'll purchace Waters of Mars rather than use Youtube this time, better watching experience, worth the $15!  Can hardly wait though!

Dr Who to ABBA? OK, I'm gonna have to check that out! Thanks fellow fan!

Elanorgold, you simply must get to someone's home that has space for Jan 2.  They are having a Dr Who marathon with all 5 of David Tenant's specials, including the Christmas special.  Rent a hotel room if you have to.  You just can't miss it.

Chuckle. Oh man. Well the 5 episodes come out as a box set Feb 2, I may just have to wait one extra month. : (

In the mean time though, I'm going to buy season 3 very soon with xmas money and enjoy a couple episodes I missed, and others I haven't seen since they aired. That'll tide me over, plus I just bought 4 seasons of Northern Exposure in a boxing day sale!! What a pig I know! But they were so cheep I couldn't refuse. $24 for the first three seasons, and $12. for season 5! And I got The Half Blood Prince for $12 too! At CD Plus. Wohoo!

I hope you got your Harry Potter box set!

Thanks for the head's up, Somegirl.  I know what I'll be doing on the 2nd.

With my luck, we'll get a snowstorm and I'll lose the sat connection.

I didn't get my Harry Potter box set, I'm going to wait until they are all out.  I did however get Dr Who, season 4, which I already have but my brother kept the reciept, so now I have to think.  Should I get Dr Who season 2 or 3 (season 1 for some reason is more expensive and the library has fewer copies so the hold list is much longer) or see how much season 1 of Torchwood costs and if I can get that.  I really like the Family of Blood episodes in season 3 where the Dr becomes human, but I also really like the Christmas episode in season 2.  What to do, what to do?  And the final episodes of each season: Cybermen or The Master?  I'm leaning toward The Master, he is my favorite villian of all time.

Space is also having a Torchwood marathon Jan 1st starting at 5 PM ET.

I was in a toss up between seasons two and three too, but there's three episodes I haven't seen in season 3! So that was the decision maker there. (Don't know how I missed them the first time around.) I really love season 2 too. Our first episode was the Satan Pit. I was totally surprised and excited by it. Wow finally! I thought. Something good on tv again! We were able to get seasons 1 and 2 out the library as well and fill ourselves in on everything that had gone before. I really liked Human Nature and the Family of Blood too.

The Master for sure. I've never been as fond of the Cybermen as I am of the Daleks or The Master. That said, I haven't seen the new Master yet, just heard really good reviews of him. For me, the definitive Master is still the late Roger Delgado who introduced the character during the tenure of Jon Pertwee as the third Doctor.

In discussing Who villains, though, I must note that one of my favorite New Who moments (which are, as you know, rare due to a lack of TV watching time) was seeing the Sontarans get a full two-parter. They are one of my favorite classic Who villains but never got enough love or airtime in the old days IMHO. New Who's portrayal of them was much better, as well, since we finally got to see them as the massive clone army they are supposed to be, instead of just seeing an individual (or a few individuals) as usually happened in more budget-constrained days of Classic Who.

Alex, I'm not even watching your clips.  I want it to be a suprise.

Just finished watching Torchwood: Children of Earth, holy crap, what an emotional ride.  Reminds me why I don't let my kid watch it.  Way, way too intense.  As soon as it was over I scanned the internet and I guess that Season 4 is a go and Jack will be back.

Alex's picture

Children of Earth is great. I did not watch Torchwood after the first few episodes. I did not find it very interesting. However Children of Earth changed all that.  I found the back and forth debate on the question of "Do the Ends justify the means?" very good. Unlie most examinations of the questions, the show did a more complex treatment of the subject.

Poor Jack, the horror of it all. I felt for his kid and grandkid. This was one show not for kids.

As to the End of Time. Another Dr Who classic. You won`t believe what happens........

Does anyone else think that the mysterious women who approached Wilfred is not only a time lord, but either Donna, or the Dr`s Mother?

somegirl's picture

It can't be Donna, because Donna's quite tall, I can't see them messing up on that.  Besides she was with the Time Lords so she must have been sent there when the Time War ended before Donna became Doctor-Donna.

Was Martha married to Rose's Mickey?  What happened to the Master?  Did I blink and miss something?

It was nice to have a little of the end of the Time War cleared up a bit.

So far I really like the new Doctor.  I sure hope that he keeps up the good work.

Oh, Yes (Imagine I said it the way the Doctor does).  You could tell by the look on her face when she looked at him.  I imagine that she risked a great deal by taking her hands down to do it.  I'm thinking wife or mother.  It would have been nice if they had made it a bit more clear.

Alex, I watched the end again and answered my own questions:  The Master just disappeared, and yes that was Rose's Mickey.  I can't see the woman (as she's named in the credits) being Donna.  Even without the height, the Time Lords would never have accepted even Doctor-Donna as one of their own.  I think that the significant look that the Doctor gives Donna when Wilfred asks who the woman is indicates that the Doctor has the same relationship with the woman as Wilfred has with Donna, that is she is the Doctor's granddaughter.  The very first Doctor travelled with a girl who was allegedly his granddaughter.

The David Tennant Doctor also had a Doctor that was sort of cloned from him, I think it was in season three. Of course I hadn't seen "End of time" yet but it's food for thought.

O.K. I just watched "The end of Time". It wasn't as "down" as I thought it would be. "Waters of Mars" was (although I'm glad the cute Asian lady lived) and "Children of Earth" was maudlin. I think this one ended pretty upbeat. I did like how the President Time Lord was named Rassillon although I wonder how that affects continuity for the show going way back. I know it's probably something they're glossing over and I HATE discontinuity. Still I like the use of that name and TImothy Dalton was perfect. As for the woman my first thought was that it was a much older Donna but then I think not. Hopefully that'll be explained eventually. I do want the Time Lords to return but I want them back like they were for Doctors 2 through 7. I LOVED how we say all the previous companions. I had been explaining to my Doctor why they couldn't show Rose (alternate Earth) when they just showed her from before she met the Doctor. I thought it was cool how Luke and Sarah Jane even got an appearance. I do hope that Martha will be with Torchwood when it returns. I didn't like the "independent" remark. It'll be curious as to how the new Doctor works. In addition to "still not ginger" he made a comment about gender. I wonder if they'll ever be a female doctor. It has no precedent amongst any time lord on the show but it's been suggested at least a time or two.

This has nothing to do with either "Waters of Mars" or "End of time" but I would LOVE to see Sylvester McCoy and/or Sophie Aldred. That would be incredibly cool.

Also, who was the woman signing books. I can't figure out who her Grandmother is. It just now crossed my mind it could be Ace, I know she stayed back well behind her time but I thought it was a lot earlier than 1914. I can't think of who else though.

What a beautiful swan song The End of Time was :3

My wife and I got to see both episodes over the Holy Daze.

I cried. Such beautiful storytelling.

Seeing "James Bond" :P as a Time Lord.  Redemption, of a sort, for The Master.  Seeing Jack get back in contact with a True Love.  Seeing The Doctor make difficult choices again.  The visits at the end...

Loose-ends that I look forward to:

o why did the Ood's eyes turn red? Does that mean that 'Satan' is still active?

o who has been fiddling with the Ood's progress?

o who was the mature woman who was trying to help the Doctor out and who was with the Time Lords? My vote was Romanadvoratrelundar, played by Lalla Ward, wife of Dr. Dawkins (oh, the connexions abound!), but, upon looking at the two pictures, I think it is a different actress.  I will have to be patient :3

o how did The Master come back? What is it with his wacky powers and new Needs?

o I guess Rassilon has come out of hiding. That is a frightening thought, since he is immortal and he created much of the technology that the Time Lords use. I still remember 'The Five Doctors', how wily and schmart Rassilon was. He thought Big and Long Term.

I believe the Ood eyes turned red just to show that they were alarmed or upset.

o who has been fiddling with the Ood's progress?

No one. The Ood exist in the future, and they were being affected by cracks in time caused by the Time Lords evil doing in their past.

Remeber as the Dr left they said. " What happened, is happening now.

The same thing happened in the FOX TV Movie, time lords are more then just physical bodies.

Doctor Who Confidential stated that The Woman in the End of Time was meant to be The Doctor's Mother.  During the episode I actually thought that She was either his wife or possibly his granddaughter Susan.  I really liked the ending 'sequence' if you can call 20 some minutes of show a 'sequence' of The End of Time ( part 2) where The Doctor goes to see and help several of his past Compaions as his 'reward'.  I admit I needed kleenx before it was over.  And Ten's final line 'I don't want to go' and the look on his face there at the end made me need even more.

From what spoliers they have let out about the 11th Dr, the next season is supposed to follow straight off of "the end of time" so it's not a pre-quel season at all.

Torchwood Children of Earth shook me so much I haven't actually been able to face watching it again.  Some other gut-wrenching torchwood eps are: Captain Jack Harkness/ End of Days (final 2 eps season 1), They Keep Killing Suzie ( Season 1 ep 8), and Fragments / Exit Wounds (season 2 eps 12 & 13).

As for the Water's of Mars "The Flood" as they called the enemy-water-virus-thing made me feel creeped out taking showers or baths for days after.  There were some really good lines. One of my favorites - Adelaide Brook : "you said we die, for the future, for the human race'.  The Doctor: "Yes, beacuse there are laws. There are laws of time, and once upon a time, there were people in charge of those laws, but they died. They all died. Do you know who that leaves? Me! It's taken me all these years to realize the laws af time are mine, and they will obey me.

I finaly got my box set yesterday! Watched Waters of Mars last night. Will wait a day or two before watching the last two, gotta spread it out, a bit. (showing great self restraint)

So I didn't like the water monsters, thought that was too creepy, my favorite episodes are the psychological, emotional drama ones, so I appreciated the DOctor's internal conflict here and his snapping in the end. He oughta snap after all he's been through! Which leads me to thinking about imortality again. All the hardships one would endure, would either turn one stony cold and emotionless, or insane like the Master....maybe.

Elanorgold's picture

Elanorgold

image

I watched them the other night, and how hard not being able to come right in here and talk to you all about it! what with Telus' three day internet blackout!

I actually didn't cry! I was surprised.  But it's not like the show is ending! It's like re-incarnation, the show goes on. I'm eager to watch the new season, hopeful.

I didn't like Timopthy Dalton being in it. Too recognizeable. "It's James Bond!" He was suitably dramatic and ominous though. Makes me wish I was fully filled in on the history. It was cool to see some of that story. Awesome red robes!

The Master came back through his ring, and his followers. "A part of him survived" the Doctor said. That was a bit horcruxy perhaps? He had strange needs because his wife, the dear thing, twisted his twistedness by throwing that potion in, but she was too late and the resurection didn't go to plan. I was sad she didn't make it, would have liked to see more of her, now that she'd gotten her sences back. In the end the Master got sucked back into the dimention where the timelords went, along with them, or that was my impression.

I thought the Doctor's "mother" resembled the old Prime Minister. That was a neet feature. Funny how she wore a cream suit and big pearls!

somegirl's picture

The Master always finds a way Elanorgold.  They seem to have done away with the old "13 regenerations" rule after which the Master stole a human body in the old series, if I remember correctly.  One of the things that I always loved about the Doctor is that he is essentially eternal and it is always sad but exciting to meet the new one.  I'm hoping for another half decent run with this new one.  David Tennant has definately been my favorite so far and I've seen all of them.

Elanorgold's picture

Elanorgold

I'm hoping for a half decent run with the new one too. Eternal is good. I tried the old series a couple years ago and thought it was incredibly hokey. Perhaps I need to give it another try concentrating on the story. Which one is best do you think? (Though I doubt the library system here will have any...I might have to buy it...)

somegirl's picture

somegirl

image

I think that the new one is much better.  I still like the old ones for nostalgia's sake.  I like the way the new one expores the emotional life of the Doctor and what it is actually like to be him.  I hope that it continues to be like that now that the mystery of how the Doctor came to be the last Time Lord has been revealed.

Elanorgold's picture

Elanorgold

No, I mean which old series episodes, or season would you recommend for me to try? Obviously we both like the new series best! ; )

We watched the confidential for part 1 of the End of Time last night and it showed clips from the old series, with the old time lords and the old Master with his pointy gotie, that all sounds interesting. I wonder about the blonde guy from All Creatures, as David Tennant said he was his Doctor growing up, and got the running shoes idea from him.

somegirl's picture

somegirl

Tom Baker is many people's favorite old Dr I think because he was on the longest and I've found that most people's first Dr is their favorite.  The first old series that I'd like to get is "The Key to Time" where the Dr (Tom Baker) and a lady Time Lord (forget her name at the moment) have to go and collect all the pieces of the key to time.  It is an entire season.  I haven't looked too much into the old seasons as I want to collect the new seasons first (2 left and the specials).  Maybe you could try the Five Doctors or the Three Doctors, where you can meet more than one at once.  Another good thing about Doctor Who is that you don't have to watch most of the episodes in order to get a really good story.

InannaWhimsey's picture

InannaWhimsey

Alex, why I was curious aboot the Ood's eyes turning red in the final episodes of Tennant's reign of Dr. Who is...the first time we come across the Ood is in the 2 parter, "The Impossible Planet" and "The Satan Pit".  If you haven't, go watch it :3 and then you might be as frightened as I was when I saw the Ood's eyes turn red :3

Elanorgold, you ask for recommendations for 'old' versions of Dr. Who to watch?  Well, the only one I recommend to you is the very first episode, because that will give you a feel of how the show was originally going to be run.  "The Unearthly Child."  If you watch enough of the series, it will grow on you, the concepts and possibilities will grow, you will come to know and care for (and dislike) the characters.

You might want to try a sampling of each doctor to get a 'feel' for them, perhaps at their beginnings?

Which would be something like this:

"An Unearthly Child" William Hartnell (aka Grandfather)
"The Power of the Daleks"  Patrick Troughton (aka Moe the Grump)
"Spearhead from Space" Jon Pertwee (aka The Genteelman)
"Robot" Tom Baker (aka the Bohemian) (I still have his last episode on VCR tape for good memories' sake)
"Castrovalva" (a real mind-*uck of an episode) Peter Davison (aka Cricket, Anyone?)
"The Twin Dilemma" Colin Baker (aka The Walking Acid Trip)
"Time and the Rani" Sylvester McCoy (aka the Night Stalker)
"Doctor Who" Paul McGann (aka The Oscar Wilde 1 shot)

Up to current day.

Elanorgold, there might be a Dr Who fan club in your area--they would be a good source of free who-watching :3

Rumor, also known as the Doctor Who News Page,(http://gallifreynewsbase.blogspot.com/) has it that the new season will start airing around Easter. Both in the UK and on BBC America.

I, personally, think that Matt Smith is going to make an excellent Doctor.

Elanorgold's picture

Elanorgold

image

I hope so Rowan. Nice to see you again!

After watching the part two of the confidential for the final episode, I see how calculated the episode was, emotions being acted but not felt too deeply, partly as a way to keep themselves from getting too emotional, and partly because they were, or David was, ready for it to be over with. That may be why I didn't cry during the episode. David himself said the episodes of Rose's leaving were more emotional for him. Me too. How they rehearsed the line "I don't want to go", palying it in 4 different levels of upset, brought that idea home, that it felt detatched.

Rowan's picture

Rowan

image

I didn't watch the entire Doctor Who Confidential for those teo episodes, I rarely do, but I didn't find Tennant's acting in either episode to be 'detatched'.  I found the last episode to be very emotional myself. I am not surprised that they ran through several versions of that last "I don't want to go" scene (and probably of most of the other scenes too) this is TV afterall.

I want them to hurry up and relase the music from the specials.  That "universe sings you to your rest" theme was especially beautiful.

-Love and Monsters (enjoyed the music, hated the blob and the lack of Doctor!)

-The Sound of Drums (too violent for me, though appreciate the storyline)

-Planet of the Dead (didn't like black haired strumpet, nor the Doctor's apparant amnesia about his all too recent tragedy of loss till the very end of the show. I like the end when he rejects the strumpet and the prophesy is given.)

I watched End of Time again last night and my favorite bits are: the cafe scene, which is really heartwrenching, but brief; and Wilf locked in the nuclear booth after he knocks four times. Great scenes. I love how the Doctor bursts out with emotion (something I would do) then sais it's an honour to die for Wilf.

When Matt Smith appears at the end, I think he looks like a troll! Didn't he look ugly after David's face! It'll take some getting used to. I like the "I'm a girl!" with a crack in his voice, "No, not a girl", and "Still not ginger", that was funny. "Lots of fingers."
