I have noticed in the debate over the Catholic Church how some people are so willing to accept certain things that seem to be obviously lies.
Likewise I once had a boyfriend, who lied to me all the time. I would always believe him, and maybe because I wanted to believe that he was telling the truth. I got seriously hurt as a result.
After watching this commercial for 501's it occured to me that often we know that these lies are lies, but that we hope to get something by believing in them.
I wanted to believe that my boyfriend would work out, and that by loving him unquestionably, I would end up with a husband, and proof that love can overcome all things
Does anyone else have thoughts on this
The video is very clever and funny if you are looking for a laugh.

When believing against all reason and evidence is seen as a good thing, you can make the faithful believe anything.

The faithful might not believe but they are so afraid of the consequences that have been drilled in them , it is easier to go with the lies. their bases are covered for the afterlife.

Hi Alex,

I think that you hit the nail on the head.
What is desired is not what reality offers so, we accept the lie that allows us to believe that not only do we get to keep our cake we get to eat it too.
It is also important to focus on why any of us would choose to believe the lie because we are the only persons in the relationship that we can actually change.
If we focus on the lie of the other rather than why we swallow it we do not learn enough never to swallow the lie again and so the one who does lie will never learn that they gain nothing with the lie.
I suspect that we swallow known lies for the same reasons we might tell a lie. We are afraid of losing something and so we are prepared to give up pieces of our selves in a vain attempt to hold on to what we are so desperate not to lose.
Lives lived out of hope and love have no need for lies. Lives clouded in fear use lies as their primary currency of trade.
Grace and peace to you.
John

I wanted to comment on the commercial you put up Alex.
What a weird one. It certainly pushes the envelope.
Does it say
" buy our jeans because we have no morals, we believe in lying, breaking and entering, promiscuity"?
very odd.
