Do you lie on the internet?
It's fair if you withhold some information, that isn't lying.
Just curious. =]
Personally - I don't recall ever lying on the internet. I've withheld quite a bit from certain places and been more open on other places. But overall I don't think I've ever lied.
I think people that lie about things like their age, location, gender, etc. are quite sad. If they don't feel comfortable with disclosing such information then most of the time they don't have to.
Discuss.
I'm thinking maybe a thread like this once a month or so, just to make some new topics (aside from discussing browsers or hosts every second week) to discuss. :] Do you lie on the internet?
It's fair if you withhold some information, that isn't lying.
Just curious. =]

Greetings!
This is the only place on the internet I post.
I do not lie when I post. I do not stretch the truth.
I do withhold information, especially personal information, as I am not comfortable putting my personal data out on the web - so I try to be very selective in what I post about myself and my family.
(I like stories, musicsooths!)
Hope, peace, joy, love ...

Jesou, you would say that.
I don't lie here, I use it as a place to discover the truth about myself, and infact spill a lot of truths that I don't in real life. I might occasionally sway from one side to the other in what I say, in order to discern what I truely feel and think, but that's not lying. That's self discovery.

I don't lie here. Okay, there is the issue of my outfit for the Wondie awards.......not a lie......a fantasy. I do withhold information though out of a desire for some privacy.

I speak the truth but do have other whole parts of my life that I don't reference here.
The desire for privacy? Maybe altho I knew 1 w/c in real life and have met 2 others, and "know" several others as facebook friends.

I only lie in obvious jest on the internet - but I sometimes change names or minor facts so that people near me cannot be identified.

Well, that depends!
Humour is a big part of my personality. That is not a lie.
BUT, when I stated that the only way I've seen the roofer is when we've both been horizontal - I admit (regretfully) that I LIED. The fact is that I've never seen the roofer at all - which I'm sure is a great shock to you all.
I also have my serious side. (My sister does a passable impersonation of me - she clasps her hand on her forehead and says, "I'm ..... and I'm very intense about everything.")
So, when it comes to my thoughts, feelings, and spirituality - I tell it how it is. These three things are important to me, so I wouldn't have it any other way.
Life is about connecting - and it seems to me that if you choose to live an inauthentic life how can you make satisfactory connections? I'm too old now to worry about making a good impression - this is the time for being real.
That said, I am guilty of embellishment. Life to me is just another story - with a beginning, middle and end. In my mind, everything is in story form - and when I tell of it it's as if I hit an invisible "play again" button.
But , there isn't a "play again" button - so some distortion must occur. I like to remember in conversation - which, if you think about it, must contain some distortion. (No ers, ums, etc).
Although guilty of embellishment, I don't consider it lying. I'm true to my feelings and thoughts - even though at times it might be more prudent not to be.
Buggered if I'm going to spend my life being prudent - so there!

I don't think I lie, My profile is true - age, sex, occupation, religion. My home province is NB, althugh I have lived in NS, Quebec, and Ontario, and visited every province in Canada (and reported to the Cafe about my trips).
But I do withhold information. I haven't used my real name or posted a picture of myself - although some of you have met me or figured out who I am. I haven't identified my children - unless you can age their baby/toddler pictures. I haven't identified my grandchildren. And yes, I have children and grandchildren.
I don't think I lie but I do change my mind. In one thread I might say I like carrots, and six months (or six days) later I might say that I don't like carrots. Perhaps I've eaten them prepared a different way or heard something nasty about them. Or perhaps somebody on the Cafe says something that I don't agree with right away, but after I think about it for awhile I begin to see things their way, and eventually that becomes so much my way of thinking that it becomes part of me. So if you find comments of mine that seem to contradict - they probably do, and they were probably true for me at one time or another.
I also often walk around with my foot in my mouth. I try to be funny and people take me seriously. I say things without thinking. And sometimes I just don't express myself right and people take things I say the wrong way.
But I try to be honest.

I've never seen the roofer around here - but I have seen a very attractive painter. And some of the university students that walk along the path by my house make me wish I was 50 years younger.

Ah, but not for long. I'm just biding my time.
One of these days I'll sidle up to the roofer and say, "Psst. Want to come back to my place? I know how to animate your laptop."

That bugg eyed smiley is FUNNY! Ya know, when I was young, I thought that people generally liked people their own age, and that though I found "old" men yukky at the time, I would in due cource find them attractive and the hot guys of my youth would no longer be of interest. Now I understand that a hot man is a hot man, weather the woman seeing him is 16 or 70! I was right though that older men have become attractive as I got older.
I remember when I was 19 and got my "woman" hips, how pleased I was, then about a year after that I got interested in nice beards!!

How do you get anything positive if you lie. Take the cafe for instance. Let's say I have a concern about something. How do I get any good feedback if I lie about the matter, the response will be distorted accordingly. The more I lie in the beginning, the more distorted the feedback will be. I truly think the most I've done is to deliberately avoid proper names of people and places. I sometimes share that here, because I trust this group more, but generally I say "my friend" or "my daughter", and I'll say I'm in "rural Tennessee" but not which town. I consider all of that basic internet rules.
