Blasphemy

BLASPHEMY - abuse of or contempt for God or sacred things

Jesus was even accused of blasphemy in Matthew 9:3 when he claimed to be the Son of God.

So, then, when we watch vids of Jesus and God and laugh; bobbleheaded Jesus, buttons, bumperstickers, signs, when we mock other religion's rituals and traditions ( as they may mock ours), when we dance in the sanctuary , and a million other examples that I could name, is this blasphemy?

What, then, is the punnishment for blasphemy? Or is blasphemy for one not blasphemy for another?

What do you think?

Hello crazyheart...God bless you...

I believe blasphemy is any hatred of God...if Jesus's name is out there its a wondeful thing...as long as it is not out of line with Gods Word...

Love the Lord with all Your Heart, All Your Mind, All Your Strength, All Your Soul...This is Another Part of Salvation....Very Spiritual...And Love Others As God Loves Us...Awesome God We Rely On....

Is it just me, or is this the second topic this week that comments or posts of mine have germinated?

Hunh.  Must be on my provocative game.

When I think of definitions, I like to start with the dictionary/etymology.  Blasphemy is very close to its original Greek "blasphemia", meaning 'profane speech, slander' or "blasphemein" meaning 'to speak evil of'.  So keeping that in mind, how do we use blasphemy now?  I would say it's still about speaking evil, only I would argue that nowadays, it's more a lack of respect than a downright evil statement.

But why is blasphemy usually only related to religion?  Where did that start?

I think blasphemy is not to fulfill our godly potential.

Jesus statement "I and the Father are one" was not blasphemous but pious. And to let the Father and ourselves be one, and act from that awareness, is not blasphemy but piety.

I'm told that much of what I say is blasphemy.

How would dancing in the sanctuary be blasphemy? David danced when he took back the Ark of the Covenant from Obed-edom.

When people think that God's last name is dammit, that I believe is blasphemy.

I agree with Arminius on this one.

Today I missed what promised to be a perfect strike at bowling.  One pin left standing.  Then  I rolled the second ball, strait at the pin, a perfect spare and the ball missed by a sixteenth of an inch.  I turned around and stated:  `God must be mad at me today.``

When I was a child I was taught that any time I speak of God in a light or thoughtless way, I am blaspheming.  Somehow, I don`t think God cares a hoot about a casual remark.

I think blasphemy might be expressing hatred of God or God`s creation.  Blasphemy might be showing disrespect for, or harming, any of God`s creatures.

If I'm not aware of my own disgust at something, at the mechanisms I participate in having that feeling and am attached to that feeling (think of it as 'real'), then I can call it "BLASPHEMY!" and hope that I am around like-minded thinkers who will then agree with me. Thereby totally not having to deal with any role I have in the feeling's (and the subject's) creation.

Faer's musings also brings forth the notion of how our words can affect our thinking and through that the world. Words that are repeated can tend to be believed more. Those that want to keep a belief 'pure' would naturally have concepts that could conceivably weaken the belief to be blasphemies.

Every tribe, every B.S. has their own blasphemies, their own Damned Things, their own Taboos.

I see blasphemy as active rather than passive.  Mind you, words can express views that are blasphemous, but deliberate acts of betrayal, contempt, etc., especially in religious matters, are greater forms of  blasphemy.

I was taught evil or profane speaking of God. It was about words and there did not have to be any act. In Judaism,, it was like verbal abuse of God. It was idolatry or rejection of God. Blasphemy was words, heresy was acts.

I was taught, cursing God was blasphemy. As in, God can go....

It was not blasphemy to curse using God as part of a swear word or curse phrase (God having that last name consumingfire does not like).

Again,  if that last name of Damn becomes the first name of God,  it is blasphemy. If it is the last name, nope.

To Jews,  blasphemy was about God and not about Judaism. It was not blasphemy to speak out against the church. Christianity made blasphemy include speaking ill of or cursing the Church. The UK even has a blasphemy law on the books, I believe they still do, that you cannot reproach the Church of England.
