Communion With Wine

In the United Church, the council or board, I believe, decides what elements should be used for Communion. Most opt for grape juice for a variety of reasons.

Children are encouraged to participate in Communion. It was a long fought fight and in most United Churches, children are now included.

BUT............should your church decide to use wine , would churches still be as welcoming of children to Communion.

This is a wondering question.

Yes....

Why?  Because if you did use wine, you would want to also offer grape juice, and make it clear which is where.  This is only fair for those who have taken a pledge, are alcoholics or are underage

The Anglican church uses wine and some churches have a program for families that is like confimation lite, I forget what it's called.  After the family goes through the program the children can take communion.  It was funny watching the kids taste unconsecrated wine.  After a taste, my son was not interested in taking the wine but he did take the wafer.  He was 6 when we went through the program.

In churches I've attended that serve wine for communion with the little glasses they also include a few glasses with grape juice for those who choose not to have wine - so those could be designated for children also.

Offering both wine and grape juice is a wonderful solution!

To me that is a very sensitive and loving way to accomodate everyone.

After all .... the wine is meant to represent something and to split hairs over what is used to do the representing would seem to be,..... excuse the pun,..... fruitless........

Hugs

We have served both at a communion service done by intinction (I know..i know...soemone is going to tell me it is wrong to do it, as it increases likelihood of germ spread)

The wine station was a special station and identified as such.

This is standard in the Eastern Orthodox church, even for small children (i.e. bread soaked in wine and served via a spoon).  I am not sure that it increases the likelihood of germ spread because alcohol is a disinfectant.

I can under where the U.C. is coming from with the grape juice though--if it related to the high incidence of alcoholism among Celts (and among the poor of London where the Methodists preached).   I won't criticize them for that.  (please note, I am not criticizing Celts, 3 of my grandparents were from Scotland).

Geez my congregations would never ever go for the wine.

Why?  Because they are too cheap.  They're too cheap in fact to buy real grape juice and opt for that "Fruite" kool aid type crap.

Yuck - if I was offered Kool Aid type junk at a church I would likely not return.  Just grape juice seems like a bit chintzy to me - I grew up on wine.

In our congregation we have both wine and juice. It goes in alphabetical order when you get up to the front of the church to receive communion: bread, juice, wine. I like having the choice of juice and wine - sometimes I like to go with what is familiar (juice) and sometimes I prefer to have the traditional (wine).

Hi guys-- Is it not wonderful that we have a God that can change , Water into wine, wine into Blood, and Blood into water.Dose it mater what you use in church for communion if you want to use what are Lord did . Then use wine. But I think it don't mater. For it is not what is in your mouth but what is in your head.
