Essential Sunday School Music

After a somewhat prolonged period without weekly music, I have agreed to help provide our church Sunday School with music.  Because of the prolonged music hiatus, they are something of a fresh page.  What do you consider essential hymns, songs and choruses the dear little sprouts should learn?

Yay Dave - I hope you and the children will have lots of fun together! Our kids like to sing songs with actions. Like A Rock, by Linnea Good, is one of their favourites, as is Grab Another Hand (sorry - I don't know who wrote it). We do the Magic Penny song for the offering. When there's a birthday in the group, we change the lyrics to "Happy Birthday":

Happy birthday to you,

We celebrate you,

May God bless you and keep you,

The coming year through.

I hope this helps!

Our children seem to like "Part of the Family"   Come in, come in and sit down. You are a part of the family. . ."

And there is a chorus where one side of the room singing Hallelujah, and the other side singing 'Praise ye the Lord'   with a lot of standing, sitting, hopping up again.

Johnny Appleseed is a favourite grace.

For the beauty of the earth

Go tell it on the mountain

the Huron Carol    (not my favourite but young people seem to like it)

I am the Light of the World

In the Bulb there is a Flower

It only takes a spark   (an old CGIT hymn)

We are marching in the light of God

anything with actions or hymns that they can learn to 'sign'.  We have a teacher in our group who works with deaf children in the school system and she is able and willing to teach 'signing'.   My grandson at five caught on faster than I could.

The Theology of the word are important!

and the tune has to be easy for children to sing

One of my favourites is "Here I am Lord" and I think it would work for Sunday school.
