high profits, big cuts

Mr. Coyne warns us that the baby boomers can expect cuts in their old age pensions. Workers at a factory are locked out even as the factory reports record profits. The child povery rate is rising. working and middle class wages struggle while  the incomes of the wealthiest in the western world rise to the highest levels in recorded history.

We have an economic system based on greed, self-interest, and abuse - not to mention war, torture, and assassination.

Gee. I dunno. It seems to me there are moral questions here.

I don't suggest the church must be critical of what is going on. Indeed, it might well decide that exploitation, abuse and greed lie at the heart of the Christian message. If so, it should cut out all this crap about loving our neighbour, etc. It should be naming corporation CEOs as saints, leading us on the heavenly path.

Whatever the church may decide, I really do think its time to decide something -  precisely what the hell it thinks Christ's message is.

I agree with your analysis. What has developed among the rich and powerful is a culture of entitlement the like of which has not been seen since just before the French Revolution. If the current trend to excessive greed and profit taking continues we might just have another American Revolution only this one would have a good reason,

We could start by ousting our current Reform aka conservative PM as an act of Christian responsibility.

Not that this would solve problems outside Canada, but my belief is that we need to stop Harper before he destroys the whole Canadian security net by pandering to the rich and greedy, while referring to the aging population as "the biggest threat to the economy".

He's the biggest threat.

Ninji - I agree.  But how do you propose to do it.  He has a majority.  He can do a lot of harm in the next four years, including changing a few things (like cutting off funding to all parties (his party doesn't need it)) that will help him in the next election.   How do we 'stop Harper' before he destroys us.

I guess I'm hoping by now that even real Conservatives can see through him. He's not what they voted for. I think the whole issue of messing with pensions is going to lose votes for him since it affects seniors of every political stripe.

I think signs saying "Stop Harper" should start to appear everywhere!

Do you think that the 'Occupy' movement might help?  Should it be encouraged as soon as the weather permits?  if so, how can the churches help?   my church is located just a few blocks from city hall where the occupy movement took place in my city.

The NDP and Liberals need to present attractive and viable alternatives.

Hopefully both the NDP and Liberals will select new leaders with credibilty.  Jack Layton is a tough act to follow, and the Liberals have certainly not helped their cause with poor past choices.

And we, the people, need to speak out, LOUD AND CLEAR.  No more being passive Canadians.

There's nothing better'n a silent majority .. eM out there in the cold where they should stay as par tof the better par of the story for the high and mighty who hate a devilsh thinker ... thinking could get you in trouble with monotheist that believe in God as Love alone but they haven't seen the other side of the Myers-Briggs profile ... that's Deist, dust or just the dirty devil as kissed by mire ...

A bottoming out of everything is required to turn things around in a world that hates prophets of doom ... like Christ was in the myth of the story ... telling the powers (Juis) of OzeM nature they couldn't avoid truth by negative version of lying to avoid facts. Yet delucian of all as good news goes on and on here ... they can't see the other side of the story ... not what the poor want but what they need to avoid chewing on the fringe of rich society ... the flower of sharing ... that's obtues in the myth as dark ... Lil ethe there ... like a psyche just not there when you wish an emotional respons ethat's quick ... the thoughts come from further away and man hasn't that virtue ... to study the underlying facts as what went wrong the former times ... patients ... dead and gone to wonderland? Its a hope for us that believe in the metaphysical soul that's out there and can actually envion something different that overpopulation just for a marketplace of profits ...

There is a stunning passibivity across Canada. for a long time, i t hought it was only New Brunswick. If course, it there is any revolutionary talk or action, the papers and the privileged will blames the rebolutionaries. The reality is that revolutions are usually caused by the privileged.

Lenin didn't cause the russian revolution. The cause was a czar and his aristocracy who were both uncaring and incompetent. The French revolution was cause by kings and courts. The Cuban revolution was caused by a brutal dictator who had american support.

I really do wish I could see the churches getting more serious about the Christian message.

When the le Gassy (of brutality) accumulates it only takes a spark to ignite it ... alchemical principal ... but it is said that 90% of people when contemplating bad news bares a message ... they don't wish to know about backfires ... stinky pedres ...

Our Justice Circle has been having this same discussion. We have a great concern that the announcement around pension change could be a red herring to keep us all busy while other nefarious moves take place under our noses.  The way Bill C-10 was passed so quickly in December with the majority government shutting down debate while Canadians were busy with our Christmas shopping season.

I got involved with our Occupy in the fall and when asking for a meeting space during the very cold months, our council was alarmed by our treasurer stating that if we got involved we could lose our tax exempt status.  I am still working on it.  Very difficult to move comfortable people who take pride on the investment income they survive on.  We are now at the stage of inviting some 'Occupy' peeps to come visit.  Sigh, our committees move in a glacial fashion, but we eventually come round to do the right thing.  I don't know if our occupiers will re-occupy in the spring with a court decision against them.   There are however, many other actions taking place and I advertise to my congregation.  Tomorrow we rally in front of the US Consulate for "No War on Iran".

It's good to hear of a church that's active.

Actually it is members who are active.  Some congregations are very activist, and some permit members like mammas to be activist.  Success begins with mutually caring relationships and moves forward with sound information, clear values, and persistent courage.
