Great question: I'm not sure. But I am bookmarking this thread to learn about the answer.

Hi lovebelize:
One recieves the holy spirit in the time-honoured fashion: The sky opens and down comes a dove holding an olive branch in its beak.
This, of course, is a joke. The real time-honoured way is a 40 day (partial) fast or euqivalent with plenty of meditation, sort of a Christian equivalent of the Native Vision Quest. Or any kind of meditation, anytime.

You receive the Spirit of God when you repent of your sins and accept Jesus into your heart. It is at that timeless moment that Jesus baptizes you in the Spirit.
Peace in Christ.

There may be two questions here:
How does one receive it?
I think we already have it, from birth.
How do we become aware that we have it?
Arminius has one good answer.
As to repenting our sins, accepting Jesus, and being baptized - that has only worked for the last 2000 years, and then only for those in the "chosen" cultures and lands of earth. What was the procedure prior to that?

That sounds like a scene from Alien. In fact, as the two are just as likely...you could interpose them I guess. You get the holy spirit from the alien egg that puts a baby alien in you to grow.

What's so special about a minister of God?
I don't think you GET the Holy Spirit. It is around us and in us all of the time.

I think that when one is reaching out towards God you receive him into your heart.
God is always there, waiting for us. It is we who must stretch out a metaphorical hand to him.
I don't believe baptism and repenting of sins are required. I believe what is required is for you to ask to be with god.
I think that often baptism may come first but can also be a sign of your commitment to the God you hae started to know.

Greetings!
The Holy Spirit, God's spirit, or holy spirit, is everywhere . . . always present, always guiding, always counseling, always giving wisdom . . . and, from our perspective (not God's) becomes part of our lives when, as lastpointe says "when one is reaching towards God you receive him into your heart" . . . or soul. The Holy Spirit is God with us, God before us, God behind us, God beside us, God above us, God below us, God within us.
People do the act of receiving the spirit of God into their lives and souls in a wide variety of ways. Some just accept and receive as they know and understand God (and God's spirit), and for others the process of repenting of sins, being baptized, and accepting Jesus into their hearts is what happens for them.
To me it does not require the conferring of one believer to another.
Hope, peace, joy, love . . .

If you can describe to me exactly what the Holy Spirit is and demonstrate its existence (or cite an article in a published research journal from a credited university that demonstrates its existence) and I will do my best to tell you how you recieve it.

No, you have likely embraced an idea of a Jesus character which aligns with your preconceived notions of what a great guy he must have been. As I have posted in another thread, there is no evidence for a historical Jesus, so your beliefs about said character are (not meaning to sound brash) "all in your head".

The Holy Spirit surrounds us, upholds us, and dwells within us from the moment of our birth. We can ignor it or we can embrace it. We can nourish our relationship with the Spirit in various ways. For me it is study: both reading and attending seminars and workshops. For others it may be meditation. I think service to others also makes us more aware of the Spirit within and among us.
How do we receive the Holy Spirit? Its here!

The trouble with analogies is that they are fictional anecdotres that are made up to illustratye a point that you want to believe is true. If the point isn't true, the analogy, no matter how pithy and wise it might sound, is meaningless.
Analogies can be used to illustrate a point, but they can never be used to prove a premise. Unfortunatly the fundies don't seem to be able to grasp that.

apart from your devil tactics , calling people moron for being a creationist, or " it does say a lot about your truth", i know you do it because it gives you validity to your pagan ministry (in your mind anyway ), apart from reading all your posts and attitude with in them, you so so remind me of Nathan in exodus

apart from your devil tactics ,
As has been pointed out to you several times, the "devil" is your God of evil, not mine. My faith neither has, nor needs, a Satan. Maybe when you pop in to Sunday School to figure out what the story of Balaam's Ass is all about, you could get them to explain that whole "satan" thing to you as well. I really don't have time to give you basic Bible training.
Kirk Cameron is not a moron just because he is a Creationist. he's a moron on many levels. He just chooses to really prove he's a moron by what he pretends to be knowlegable about. There are many Creationists who are smart enough not to try to argue against the science of biology without any knowlege of biology. Kirk Cameron, et al, OTOH, are not smart enough to know not to spout off on a subject he knows nothing about, else he wouldn't be using that ridiculous "perfect banana" fallcy.
Kirk Cameron is a Creationist AND a moron, which is a combination laughable, if it weren't so dangerous to our children.
Wow, so in addition to your vast knowlege of Sunday school stories (ROFLMAO), now you know my mind better than I do. I was under the impression that mind reading was a sin for Christians, but maybe I was wrong?
Exodus? Are you perhaps trying to refer to Nathan, the faithful prophet of God to David, In 2 Samuel? I don't recall any mention of any Nathan in Exodus.
I think you're missing a ? or two in that sentence. As for where is God? Well He's right here with me, having a giggle at your confusion and self-righteousness. P.S. God says "Call me sometime BB, we need to talk"
Ahhhhhh OK now we see what the problem is, You see BB, Christians aren't supposed to have Gods of Gold. It's nice of you to want to give me your God of Gold, but I already have The God of Creation right here with me.
At least I know the Bible....

Really? You'd think someone who read the Bible would know that both Balaams's Ass and Nathan the prophet were heroes of their stories, and would know that Nathan was in 2 Samuel, not in Exodus.
Really, BB, two pretty blatant errors in less than a week; errors any sunday school kid would spot... and you expect us to believe you know what you're talking about?
Maybe you should read it a little harder...

wow how dumb can you be? not being able to read between the lines when someone calls you an ass, unless of course your only playing dumb to try and disprove me and other evangelicals so in that light it gives your pagan ways some validity and comfort, which of course in the eyes of the true God of the Bible you have no validalty at all, thus the true scorce of your hatered . Then after you being a witch at its finest pushes these evangelicals buttons and they push back, you accuse them of not being Christian or your fave is , here let me quote you I have you so down pat LOL
“ is that a fruit of the Spirit”, or here is another fave line you like to use “how come my god tells me different” , even better line you use “ I like to use scripture against Christians “
Thats why I call you satan, because satan did the exact same thing , but im sure you already know that since you say you know the bible LOL

You dance, sidestep and weasel with consummate skill BB, but the fact remains...
Twice you tried to insult me using Bible characters...
Both times you mistakenly compared me to Bible heroes...
And the second time, you didn't even get the book of the Bible right...
That's you, the "true" Christian, at zero for three on a subject any sunday school ten year old would know backwards and forwards... zero for three.
And to make matters worse, it was a Pagan wwho had to point out those mistkes to you.
You can dance and weasel and obfusctate all you want BB, but the fact is, you're exposed. No one here is ever going to take you seriously again on any "deep" spiritual subject. And to make matters worse, ratehr than just own up to it and admit you screwed up, royally, you're still trying to make excuses and put the blame on other people.
Sorry BB, no one's buying it.
You may continue your whining now.

Hi Witch,

There is no Nathan mentioned in the book of Exodus.
In the movie (DeMille's The 10 Commandments) there is a Dathan. Dathan is not mentioned in the book of Exodus either.
Dathan does show up in the book of Numbers and Deuteronomy.
Dathan is one who rose up against Moses and eventually met his end when the ground opened up and swallowed him, his tents and his belongings.
I think DeMille collapses this into the immediate aftermath of the Golden Calf debacle.
Grace and peace to you.

Hello everyone .......God bless you....
The Holy Spirit is available to all of Gods children who ask for it ....of course you have to believe in the Trinity to get the Holy Spirit.....which consist of The Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit/Ghost......when you give your heart to God you are sealed with the Holy Spirit of Promise as Gods act to show you His existence....and of course you will feel it upon you....I also believe the Holy Spirit can be felt and passed on to others...by being in the presence of the Holy Spirit...you cannot help but feel it ...this explains how when people go and worship and praise God they feel the Holy Spirit...
The Holy Spirit is an another Awesome part of the Trinity.....it is what carries Gods Love and will ....these can be delivered straight to our hearts or through Gods angels who minister to us ....he/she gives you love, insight, wisdom, knowledge...all we could possible ask for ....it can warn us of impending danger..prays to us to the Father, and it can spread like wild fire....when the Holy Spirit is upon you ...you can feel its fire upon your soul....Awesome God we Worship....
You know when you have the Holy Spirit upon you as you cannot help but be the Fruit of the Spirit.......

Hi Witch,
Both times you mistakenly compared me to Bible heroes...
Well . . .maybe. I think that the Nathan reference was more typo.
Dathan is certainly not a hero.
However, the Baalam's ass reference is hard to read as anything other than a compliment. Even though it was never intended to be one.
Oddly, it wouldn't be the first time that what one has intended for evil God has used for good.
God is pretty funny that way.
Grace and peace to you.
