Got any practical plans about what we should do about it?

Just say no. No huge, expensive house, no gas-guzzling vehicle, no expensive designer clothes made in sweat  shops, no watering the lawn (just the garden!) no reliance on food imported from a zillion miles away, no cruise ships, no expensive cosmetic surgery to prop up false vanity, no money spent on weapons and war, no swallowing the lies about white teeth and fuller hair, no, no, no. 

Pretty much as Weeze has it.

From youth we have been instructed for the obtaining of more. This proclivity has us in this predicament. So let us instruct ourselves in the obtaining of less, cultivating freedom, responsibility, creativity and courage along that way.

Imagination offers a way forward.

A well funded congregation of the Christian church has been working on a project. They are seeking 20 persons to go on a Mediterranean cruise. Looks like the goal will be reached. Then an insight. The money designated for the cruise will instead establish a community wellness foundation. It will take shape as a learning resource to students in Nursing, Social Work, and other disciplines of care and concern.

This starts to happen in various locations. Money is taken from one direction and turned in another. Folks stop fuelling off shore profit to fund local initiative. Walking about in neighbourhoods folk will notice and address opportunity for gracious encouragement and the offer of other supports.

I can see kids headed for grow-ops tuned towards opportunity in the arts and sciences by the unconditional presence of the congregation's active care. Becoming friends with youth rather than courting self-esteem and peer approval in the habits of conspicuous consumption.

None of this is programmatic. It is spontaneous and immediate. Problem solving becomes a personal and shared curriculum. It is the devoted practice of loving kindness, know plainly as compassionate care.

We need to give up the structures of thought by which we have been formed. This is frightening. Like getting out of a well built boat on a troubled sea. Our confidence is in a way that opens to our active faith. Stepping out we will be that animating presence of care for which the great majority hunger and thirst.

I am now sitting at the very edge of decisive commitment. Everything in me longs for standing. In this I keep company with an invisible yet influential cloud of persons drawn by the opportunity offered by the deepening crisis. Waiting for the word by which our way is opened.

Mostly I am weary with the divided and divisive powers by which the age is governed and creation profaned.

Wouldn't it be nice if people would just put monii into such a project and stay home to watch instead of expensive wanderings that use up resources on people that won't give without creative expectations?

Then will the more powerful rules hold or the weaker powers of heart and soul ... heart of greed is a powerful breakout of the mould. I'll watch from the fringe group ... the imaginary beyond ... pure myth of mankind emote'n with care. Double entendre or just duplicity for the powers can't stand truth ... isn't that just de deuced as sacred parse ... heiros gamos? Filmy thought or black lace of the dark lady ... shiyr covenant ... many just don't see IT! 

In a nutshell - WE are the problem.  Weeze suggests saying NO to all the trappings and trimmings that are available to us.   Doing that is much easier to say than do I have found.  One of my adult kids is angry with me because I refused to spend lots of cash on birthday and Christmas gifts - so that 'proves' that I'm selfish and a  tightwad.    When I was going to church I got constant criticism of my clothing, footwear, basic haircut without a perm or added color.  Fortunately - I seem to have fairly thick skin and a sense of the 'rightness' of what I choose to spend (and not spend) money on.

I like that Weeze ... the problem, enigma of us ... hoo can't get IT together!

Now is that Hoo Dore what ...? Do us amuse the powers above to tiers? Jacked up phrase ... like unknown ET'ICs ... we should learn! Requires some morphing of the myth ... flexibility of the difficult portion .. ID'll Ham Mere IT's way out .. like Plato's cave in reverse ... an Eko ... as pas time?

But as in another string by GEOFee the rabbi is a motivational thing calling for change in an institution ... that's fixed here rigidly ... only one way out? Encompass the whole thing by becoming part of ID! Alternate flow? Cosmological shift? Some infinite wisdom needed ... Logos? Loe-psi in another tongue ... the soul under out feet ... pedantry? The peddling of unreal, imaginary, or complex things ... like rights of the genre of psyche with rationale of responsibility of the significant other! Now what's significant in the surrounding intellect? You don't know that do you ... I speak to the Maas ... of alternate directive ... hopeless desires ... that fail to see what can be changed, what can't and don't know the difference! Is that Serendipity or what ...?

Perhaps we like in a fantasy dimension, too much of the time ... because we are afraid of the Shadow .. that knows all! Dark enigma extracted from anagram ... word playing about my ears! Do you listen to white noise ... Vanilla Skye ... travelling Ai of sky, is an overhead vision of myth ... place from which to see it all. Neil Armstrong had a spiritual vision of down here ay the pit of the enigma ... life?

Don't shoot until you see the whites of their Ais ... like an Açe'n the dark form ... the cultivating or turning of the earth as Shadow ... warm hole in time as a cool time machine ... Athens awe as the potential classic age passed ... like a dream?

Do we have no imagination? Modern Neuroscience as well as educational authority has noticed that children are suffering diminished spatial capacity ... too much junk there about what they desire and don't need? Who planted this crap? Clearly divers ional stuff for truth of the manna ... unnatural emotions as thought in todays myth! Those regions flip in time ... reciprocate as Egos that's reflective ... real people hate IT as it transpires as "g" host? That's medium hanging there as Haman in Ester 's myth ... they couldn't get it collectively either ... androgynous fantasy of the isolated? Divine absence makes the heart grow ... a conflict of intellect? I pretty much found that I didn't want anything I couldn't afford...

And slid twenty years ago into a much reduced income in comfort and no feeling of loss.

What do you propose we should do about the fact that the Western world attracts immigrants who desperately want to get onto the materialist bandwagon?

Not to mention the fact that China is also working steadily and successfully towards the materialist goal.   In fact, they will soon be the world's largest consumers (per capita, no, they still have a ways to go, but their population is larger).

Hmmm.   Seems to be a lot of people in the world that kind of like our lifestyle.

I guess it won't stop until we either completely run of out oil or the environment is more severely degraded.    There is really nothing we can do about it, because so much of it is out of our hands.

Every one of us has buying power; every one has the right to say no. Every one. We're not responsible for the immigrants' choices, nor for the development of Chinese materialism. Just our own. We mustn't shrug off responsibility for our own choices just because 'everyone else is doing it.'

I can decipher enough of it to understand where he is going, and I don't always agree with him, but I never write rebuttals to him because, well, nobody understood his point in the first place.

Edit:  Just read WB's last post.  I take back my claim about understanding him.  I haven't got a farking clue about that one.

I came to the conclusion that all I can do - is what I can do.  I cannot control anyone's else's behavior, or purchasing choices.  So - I live in a very modest home, drive the smallest car that meets our needs, holiday close to home (if at all), share the money saved with others.

I enjoy WB's writing. It's unique.It's poetic genius. I don't always get it but I am glad to have the challenge, and to be presented with a different mode for thinking of things. Maybe it's his way of expressing his frustrations without attacking others...something maybe we could all learn from if we took time to communicate in ways which don't pit us against each other...but most of us tend to take stubborn stands on our viewpoints, and pitch our opinions whether we have looked at the bigger picture or not...just 'cause that's what we do. I do it. I notice others do it too.  Hard to avoid on a site that presents complex issues...we get emotional.

I think the last couple of posts speak about superficial expectations driven by unabated greed and sustained by ignorance and managed by people in positions of status or power....allowing, as it has been throughout the ages,  the weak or suffering to continue have no say...a problem created by a perpetual human flaw.

I could be wrong in my interpretation, only WB knows for sure-- I can't speak for him, but that's what I got out of it. 

Noone is listening to the quiet wisdom that exists in and around those who are suffering. We listen to opinions, one dimensional views--which creates conflict, and have lost the ability to find wisdom and common ground through art-forms which go deeper...somewhere in the depths is common ground.. Myth and mysticism being ancient forms of this expression.

For some time now, in my own usage and that of others', I've had a growing feeling that "us" and "we" are becoming stronger synonyms, and "I" figures large in the "we". It was less that way in the community I knew as a child where income spreads were modest and a number of cultures were in constant close contact.

Perhaps this is a part of all of "our" problems, a reluctance to use "we" in the sense of the whole of humanity.  Without that sense to the fore, "we" becomes a word of paternalistic ego- and ethno- centrism. It is a "band-of-brothers" outlook (rarely even a band-of-sisters), confrontational and aggressive even where there is no real or substantial opposing force. Rather, it become a force on the loose, and seems as natural as nature herself. But nature is not inherently combative; sure, it changes, sure there are preadators and prey... it is not, however, merely combative for the sake of it.

Surely every one of "us" has a value that's identical to that of "each" of all of us. For that value to be expressed universally, we ALL need to grasp the nature of that value in each "other" — and that is very interesting because that nature-of-value differs from one individual to the next. Exploring that diversity opens to us a path of radical change.

When "we" use "we", "we" should maybe try thinking, : "...and who else?".

I do not have the answer. We seem to be genetically programmed to accept to accept flock behavior and bondage. There is strength (power) in numbers, regardless of where it leads us. Addiction is involved.

Isn't that just non substantial garbage ... another's thought that interferes with our emotions? Now isn't that the weird-ist train of thought ... then thought is very strange to the emotional polity ... that never would encompass such a thing (contrary to biblical word, like Ares that is confrontational to flames, assist in cool ideas thust the cold Shower or the dip in the snow for those that go into the sona ... naked as Jah burd with similar conditiond Ephraim in Scan de Nave-IOn Realms ... where the naked soul is supposed to attend savage fests ... that is translated ... church ... they consume minds ... like O'din ... opposite a chaos of words is the cool silence that makes one wonder about what those others are doing in the hot, steamy surroundings of cede Eire in the mind assmall emotions being set fire to ... time for the snow Job again ... sort of essentual like soul adrift in mid seas of the medium ... Is this truth, or myth? I don't know but I think there is a small truth of great emotion in there somewhere ... like buried in the sole of a story as laid flat out waiting for the rising ... yeoman? Communicative plot as a device ... communisitic if you don't keep people like toadstools ... mush rheum treatment ... Shadows of institution ... ortho'd OX'ai ... go anywhere with a pall so man wouldn't get uncontrollable upset over the appearance of a strange psyche that is unconscious to-eM for obvious rationale ... to those that IC ... most of the para-dime ... tense code ... coin for the 80-20 rule ... 10 on ether end that are unable, or refuse to see IT for the greater Cos ... no Muse tuit!

It is hard even to make major adjustments even for oneself.  Our cities are designed so you cannot get around without a car.  Grocery stores are miles away from one's house.   There is supposed to be a trend for "walkable neighbourhoods" but a huge new luxury development in my part of Victoria BC (presumably attracting retirees from other parts of Canada, or the rich from Alberta) is the same old, same old.   No stores close to the houses.
