Eating in Ottawa

Ottawans of WC,

I am visiting your fair city for a few days over the Canada Day weekend. I pretty much know what we're doing tourism-wise (Parliament, the Canada Day celebrations, some museums that my son and I are interested in) but I'm wondering about good places to eat. I've been going through urbanspoon but wonder if the Ottawa and ex-Ottawa folks around here have any favorites. As a family, we tend to veer towards Asian cuisines (Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Indian) but are open to other options. We're staying in the Minto Suites and stuff within walking distance would be nice (we're driving up so will have wheels but I'd rather not spend too much time navigating around the city looking for dinner).

Oh, on that list of Asian cuisines, I left off Japanese. We're all sushi-lovers.

Minto suites is a great place to stay - but I can't recall where exactly we ate!  Breakfast in the suite usually, which is great, along with bedtime snacks!  I think one day we walked to market area - lots going on there!  It will be awesome to be in the nation's capital on Canada Day!!

Al's Steakhouse on Elgin is really good.

There was a great (and cheap) Mexican restaurant a few blocks away but I can't remember the name of it.

Try the Chu Shing, Yantzee or Yang Shang on Sommerset, they are  in Ottawa China Town, and about 8 blocks from Minto Place.

Mexican food is not great in Ottawa, but among the best is Panch Vill on Elgin, just a block from THe French United Church. Eglise Unie St Marc. It is a bit farther from Minot, but is close to the canal, and activiyites at City Hall.

I would suggest using the bixi bike service.  https://capital.bixi.com/

There is a great little restaurant in the Byward Market called Vineyards.  It has about every kind of beer you can imagine (they'll recommend one if you want to try something new) Great wine list.  Nice ambiance and good prices.  Its not Asian but it is good. Cozy.

I may well do so and was looking at that site on the weekend. I love cycling and I've never actually cycled in Ottawa in spite of its rep for being a great town for doing so.

OTOH, it's rather pricey for tourists compared to some of the similar services I've seen in Europe. $7 for a 24 hour membership plus an hourly charge after the first half hour could add up fast for a family of three. Also, max of 2 bikes per credit card means I'd need to use both my cards to get bikes for all of us.

Probably not as bad as the parking (or worse yet the parking tickets).  In Ottawa, the Green Hornets (do they still dress in green?) are like pirranhas in a feeding frenzy.  They are everywhere!  Careful!
