Bruce Sanguin has recently launched his new book, The Emerging Church: A Model for Change and a Map for Renewal.
Do you plan to read it? Would you like to join a wondercafe readers' group to discuss it?
Arminius and I propose to co-host a readers' group, which will get started after the Labour Day weekend in September. This will give us all the opportunity to add it to our summer reading lists.
The Prologue to the book is available on brucesanguin.com. It looks like a great read, and it has already been mentioned several times over in Religion and Faith.

Hello all:
I have suggested the book as the subject of a reader's group here in our Lumby, B.C. congregation. Between six and eight people from our Worship Committee and our Board have expressed interest, and we are going to order the books through our church for a discount.
I found "The emerging Church" by Bruce Senguin to be a very helpful, practical guide for individuals and congregations wishing to emerge. Discussing the book here on wondercafe at the same time as studying it with our congregational study group will be very helpful for all involved. I look forward to it, and to hearing from you all.
In Unity,
Arminius

Hi Arminius,
It looks like we have Crazyheart for our readers' group, and I know RevJamesMurray is very interested in The Emerging Church. He is taking a break from Wondercafe for the summer, but I think he will be posting again after his move to Ottawa.
That is a great idea to have a discussion group at your church about it. It will be interesting to see if the conversation takes the same direction as the wondercafe readers' group. Book studies at church are always fun.
Now I just need to find the book. I know it can be ordered from Wood Lake.

paradox3: Yes, it can be ordered from Wood Lake, only a short drive south of here, so that someone can pick up our copies in person.
I hope not just the scholarly and literary will participate. One of the saving graces of the United Church is grassroots participation, and I sincerely hope that we get a wide spectrum of grassroots into the discussion.

Glad to hear that you will be joining us!

Arminius,
We have not received much response on this thread, but no worries!
Let's go ahead with our plans to start the readers' group in September. If the WWG threads are anything to go by, folks will read our summaries and post their ideas once we get started.
I am looking forward to co-hosting with you.
Have a good summer.

I read the original manuscript for Bruce, and I'm working my way through the book now - a great improvement on the manuscript! (Glad he took my advice...lol)
The Spiral Dynamics bit is really good fodder for discussion, in particular.
But I don't want to give away the ending...ha ha.
If I'm around a bit on my computer I'll join in
- but September? Gak. I was hoping for an August discussion maybe...

RevLoveJoy,
Mid August would work for me, and I will check with Arminius to see if it would work for him.
Do you think posters will be around the cafe in the summer? I wasn't here last year at this time, so I don't really know how it goes in July and August.

LoveJoy: Yes, the "spiral dynamics" are owesome. I never though of spiritual evolution that way, and I didn't think that every evolutionary stage, even the lower ones, has it's particular strength, and that even the advanced stages have their inherent weaknesses. This certainly gave me cause for self-examination.

paradox3: My congregational study group put the study of Bruce Sanguin's "The emerging Church" off until early September, but we could begin discussing the book here on wondercafe in mid-August, particularly if we do a chapter-by-chapter discussion, as you did with Gretta Vosper's book.
This would be a thorough discussion of "The emerging Church," and I think the book is well worth a thorough study.

paradox3: I joined wondercafe in early August of last year. As I recall, August 2007 was a lively month here on wondercafe, and there is no reason why August 2008 should be boring. It is all up to us, the wondercafe patrons.

Hi Pinga,
Thanks for doing this.
Arminius asked a couple of good questions in his opening post on the summary and review thread. The thread seems to be wrapping up now, but it would be great to hear from anyone who has been following the book study.
There's still time to post .

Thanks...
Our executive team has committed to reading the book.
I am planning on sending these notes as a kick-start to the discussion.
