First Memories

What are some of your first memories?

Are they positive or negative?

How old do you estimate you were?

I know some of my memories are pretty young based on some knowns.  For the most part it they tend to be negative if it's a specific event.

I remember our first house, and we moved either a bit before or after I turned 4.  I have some good memories of it.  The neighbour was nice, and once broke his leg.  There were girls who played across the street, but it was busy so I couldn't go there, I had a guy as a friend who lived further down on the street though.

I have a few vague memories of my mom being pregnant, so I wouldn't have turned 2 yet.

I remember having a 'dream' that I was in the hospital and someone gave me a popcicle and when I woke up a popscicle was sitting on my chest in a thick cardboard dish, kinda like the cardboard egg cartons.  I'm not sure what surgery that was, I had 2 when I was young.  I also remember some of the pre-surgery program they ran for the kids.

More vivid memories are a nurse standing in the bathroom stall with me encourage me to pee and me being shocked at how much it hurt when I got a few drops out.  Going to the hospital and hearing kids crying.  Walking through the hall I asked why.  Then we got to the room, someone was trying to get a mask on my face.  All the sudden I knew why kids were crying.  I didn't know the word torture, but I was sure that's what they were trying to do to me.  I fought them so hard, and they tried to back off because it was just making my breathing issues worse.  They put the mask over their face too, but I thought it was some sort of trick.  When I brought up that memory to my mom, she said it was the first time I went for it and I had to go to the hospital every four hours for the medication.  I do remember getting a nebulizer for home and being happy, I guess because I wasn't going every 4 hours to the hospital.  I also hated that thing and spent many times crying with it on, probably because of the first bad memory with it.

I remember being in the hospital when I was very young but it's blurry. I remember our second house. I remember the first time my feet touched seaweed in the ocean that was at the beach near that house. I remember my pets. I remember kindergarten and even the smell - smelled like the teachers perfume. Some of my early friends vaguely- but then I don't know how many of my early memories are constructed from hearing stories and seeing pictures. I remember some bad memories- my mom being upset with my grandfather one Christmas and him leaving, my parents fighting before they split up. Bits and pieces of things.

I love that one!  I wish I had a first beach/ocean memory.

I don't remember being happy about it, though! It's essentially green slime. :)

Finding sand dollars. Starfish. Those are better ones.

Yeah, we used to go to BC every other year or so.  I also have relatives in Winnipeg, so we went to Grand Beach nearly every summer when I was a kid.  I just don't have a particular 'first' memory of it!

My earliest memory is standing on our wooden back porch and trying to jump-you know-2 feet to 2 feet-off the porch. I'd bend my kness and try but my feet wouldn't leave the porch. I'd guess I was 2ish.

Okay-I'd never put this together until now-I had polio-caught from an oral vaccine that wasn't denatured enough. Apparently I was too sick to even roll over-at 18months. I have a very slight residual wekness on my left side. But hey-that would exoplain my problems jumping-and my frustration aboout it.

I have no memories of being sick with polio.

Yikes!  In Canada?  I didn't realize that had occurred here.  Scary, even if it was I assume quite weakened.

You may have mentioned that before.

I have glimpses of memories of my third birthday because we were visiting at my grandmother's out of town.

I remember sitting on my uncle's knee on one occasion sometime before he died when I was three and a half.

I remember getting a whop on my butt from my dad (only spank I can ever remember) one time when we were getting ready to go out somewhere and I was fussing about something and I was around three.

I remember my sis who was two years older than me going to school and I had to stay home.

chemgal back in 1960 or 1961 in Ontario-there was one "too strong" batch. Mom felt really bad as our local health centre was out of vaccine and she drove the 3 of us to the next one to get our spoonful. In Ontario at the time-near Newmarket-1 hour from Toronto

Physically I'm really not affected-I just need to give that side more "thought" and attention when  being precise in my swimming, skiing etc. (like when doing my instructors in them)

Chemgal - I know our local children's health centre in Victoria was first started as a solarium back in the 1920s and many of its' young patients had polio. I also found out recently that someone I know who was born in the 1930s had it as a youngster growing up in Alberta.

My first memory was January 1, 1980, when I was 2.5 years old. I was sitting in the car in our driveway, having just come back from somewhere - and I remember being a little confused that everything was the same as the day before. I guess I thought everything would change because it was a new year.

I have another memory from later on that year - I remember hearing Mt. St. Helen's erupt. I remember being outside in the backyard and hearing a big bang - my Mom told me later that she thought it might have been a gun shot. It wasn't until she heard the news later that day that she realized what it was.

I remember the kittens that were born in our basement when I was four (one of whom lived with us until her passing at 20 years of age). Can't really pin down any memories earlier than that.
