Handball

I was just taking a break & turned on the Olympics - a women's handball match (Korea vs Spain)  is in progress.  I've never seen or heard of this game being played in Canada - are there any areas here where it's a familiar sport?  Has anybody played it?

I was introduced to handball during a trip to Sweden - while out on a walk I came across an enormous sports field, where a massive tournament was being played.  I was intrigued by this game - it rather looked like soccer - teams played on a simiar field, with a slightly smaller goal, but not using the feet - the ball was passed by throwing, bouncing etc. similar to what we see in basketball.   At the Olympics, it's being played on an indoor court.  It's fast paced, and fun to watch!

The only 'handball' I'd ever seen in Canada was similar to squash - played in an enclosed court, but without racquets - just bashing the ball about with the palm of the hand protected by a gauntlet - pairs sport, not team.

Handball has teams in Alberta-when taking my NCCP coaching certification (in my case for x-c skiing and soccer) our leader was big into handball. Canada  was not at the Olympics that year-like about 10 ago-as while they were offered a spot -they did not meet Canada's requirement of being at the top level in their sport. You were supposed to be in the top 10 ranking world-wide or something.

I know 2 teenage gals that play in a league in Edmonton.

I've never played it; first saw it I believe in the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Team handball is an interesting game.

I remember playing it in PE in elementary school and quite enjoying it.

So it sounds like a bit of a western Canada phenomena so far .... I missed the end of the Olympic match - will have to look up the score!

I tried out handball in College and even got to go with my team on a BC handball tournament in Prince George*-- I think my team got to the semi-finals.  I was always on the bench -- it didn't help that just before we left I injured myself with a ball driving my finger into it's sockets so I had to wear some neat-o metal & cloth splint that made me look like a junior Clive Barker creature in hiding

I liked the game -- it felt very much like soccer, there was really no 'down time' on the field.

* where we were told of 'certain areas' not to go in Prince George; I just stayed in the Hotel on the outskirts of the city.  I also got to see one of my team-mates cry at how his people had been treated in the past; I think I also got to see a younger SG (though I didn't know him at the time) flitting aboot with some Whiskey Jacks and Wood Nymphs (what loggers in BC used to be called) *waggles eyebrows*

Good times - travelling with a team, right innana?

So Spain won that match, 31-29 with 2 extra time periods - got the bronze medal.

Yeah, with a team -- I only did it for 1 semester.
