I'm a gardener.
I grow mostly vegetables, but I do enjoy the beauty of flowers.
I want to grow a particular flower in my garden that will be the "Wondercafe Flower."
The Wondercafe as I know it is ending, but I will still be gardening. I want to grow the Wondercafe flower every summer to remind me of the time I spent here. And it would be cool if other Wondercafe gardeners were also growing Wondercafe Fowers in their gardens, so we were all doing it together.
So what should it be? The Wondercafe Flower should be something that grows well from coast to coast. And it should be something that grows well in a container as well, so we don't exclude the condo and apartment dwellers among us who don't have gardens, but could grow the Wondercafe Flower in a pot on their windowsills.
How about purple wave petunias? (wave petunias tend to spread and can sometimes get out of control - that certainly reminds me of the Wondercafe.)
How about classic blue and white forget-me-nots? (Naw, too corny.)
Easter Bonnet allysum? That would be many tiny flowers in all different colours, reflecting the diversity of the Wondercafe.
So gardeners, what's your suggestion for the Wondercafe Flower?

Tiger lily beautiful, colourful, bright, thrives in many environments. And there are many varieties -exemplifies the beauty, tenacity and and range of WC members :)

I had to look them up. Black eyed Susans they're called, and Rudbeckia- both are types of brown/ black and golden yellow daisies. Reminds me of the familiar WC colours.

Marigolds grow well and bloom all season long.
I like petunias.
I like sunflowers but might be hard to grow on patios.

Edit: Carrying on with the yellow theme, and a bit on SnP's theme - California Poppy, or Golden Poppy. Is not a hallucinagen, but does have a very mild sedative effect, that calms (WC on the better days). Or, can help you fall asleep. ;)
Not sure how well it would grow where you are Beloved. It needs dryish soil and lots of sunlight (it's a wildflower there, I think- no I guess not according Wikipedia), like it's native California.

Hi GO_3838
What a nice idea...! The cultivation of memory as an act of hope.
Is there a perennial that would fit the bill?

I really love this idea, GO. I don't have any suggestions, but will definitely seek out whatever flower is chosen. I'm not much of a green thumb, but I'd make an effort for all of you!

I read through the Wondercafe Garden thread, but (to me at least) the context of my thread is different.
I specifically want to grow a keepsake flower every year in my garden, a Wondercafe Flower that is the "official" flower of the Wondercafe.
Just like the white trillium is the "official" flower of Ontario.
I wondered if we could come to some kind of consensus on choosing an "official" Wondercafe Flower, and then those of us that garden can grow it every year to always remind us of the Wondercafe.
So keep making suggestions, or give approval to those suggestions already made, and maybe we can find some consensus.

Love your idea GO! I'm a gardener too, so I will give this some thought. Need those inspirational gardening musings in this seemingly neverending winter!

I'm open to anything . . . and yes, we can grow poppies here. I like the idea of perennial also, but again, how would that would for patio gardeners?

"Hello Yellow" attracts butterflies, including monarchs (which, together with the flowers are almost perfect WC colours, too) which are becoming endangered. Could help them re-populate...

What about HollyHocks. They grow in gravel and dirt. They don't need maitenance, grow all summer, and come up every year.
There are some that have been growing in the alley behind the church here. Gravel and they never give up.

I like this idea of a WC Flower. I agree that yellow would be a good choice - bright and cheerful = reminiscent of the sun. Of the yellow flowers I can think of that will grow in beds just about anywhere across the country and in pots, on patios and maybe a window sill - I'd suggest marigolds. There are oodles of varieties so we could each choose what would work for our climate zone and growing situation.

it may be a challenge to find one plant that will thrive across our land, in sun or shade ... so maybe a colour commonality will work.
I saw a new thread posted by Mendalla - The Return of Cosmos - and I think cosmos might be a good flower choice :-)

Must it be one plant?
Could we not each find that flower which well represents our presence in the cafe? We would have in common the soil which anchors and nourishes the roots. We would have in common the water by which the soil is refreshed. We would have in common the light by which growth is triggered and sustained. We would have in common the one life manifest in its many shapes, colours, textures and fragrances.

So it seems like most people are in favour of yellow flowers, and the flower suggested most commonly is marigolds.
So shall it be marigolds?
(GeoFee, I know you suggested that we each choose a flower that works for us individually. However, I really like the idea that there are other Wondercafers growing the same flower as I am this summer, and that they're looking at those flowers and remembering the Wondercafe.)

In honour of the colour scheme I would suggest Pumpkin or Mustard.

I love those double hollyhocks, especially the peach and yellow.
If you want a tough flower try Bachelor Buttons (aka Cornflowers) - among other things the flowers are edible and the petals make an interesting garnish for salads or desserts.

Marigolds have the other advantage of being a flower that is often used as a companion plant in vegetable gardens. Keeps the bugs away from tomatoes.
Though I don't like their spunky smell much.
There is a. New flower. Called "new wonder fan flower". Seems like an appropriate name.
I think day lily's would be a good flower. Bright, many colours, fleeting blossom but keep returning, grow in fancy gardens and at the side of the road. Humble and fancy

Slugs ate my marigolds last time I planted them And I planted them to keep away some other bugs, as I recall ... so a double bust for me!
I like the idea of day lilies - easy, hardy in many conditions, diverse as suggested above.

Are you getting closer to deciding, GO_3838?

If you want to deal with slugs try sprinkling fine ground egg-shell or diatomaceuos earth around, or put out dishes of beer in little depressions in the ground so the lip of the container is level with the ground. It's a tad icky having to pour out the dead-slug-and-beer mix daily but it works.
