keeping secure online. antivirus et al.

I have a contract with Telus internet for three years. There is one year left of it.  The contract includes free Telus security. It's quite good, I like it. I have used AVG free in the past and it seems to work too. People tell me Avast is also good. Norton, on the other hand, seems to find its way in on other programs, like malware would.   You have to be sure to opt OUT or they will inclued it automatically wether you want it or not.  I found in the past that running two security programs at once doesn't work because they attack each other, haha!  (PS the computer doesn't like it....)  Telus does not include malware so I use "Malaware" for that.   For the Android phone I am running Lookout Security with great success. (Free also.) Facebook offers their own types of protection. Bit Defender Safego scans all incoming and  prevents you from unknowingly posting crap on other people's walls with your name on it.  Facecrooks provides updates on al the latest facebook scams that are circulating, many of which could easiy be stopped by some common sense. (For instance, would this person REALLY use the term "OMG!" or "OMFG!" ?)

Time to weigh in....what is your preferred security software? Any bad experiences? Do you use free or do you prefer the added protecion of the paid for versions?

This thread was inspired by the one on Operating Systems.  Safar, Chrome, etc.

I'm on a Mac.

lol I'm not that arrogant, but I do think it's a little less of an issue.  I didn't use anything for quite a while simply because I wasn't doing anything high risk, and I wasn't aware about anything free that was available.

Now I use a program put out by Sophos.  I also like their FB page, they include things about FB but other security articles as well.

Common sense is the biggest way to stay secure.  You can avoid the internet complete, but if you get a phone call where someone states it's your bank and you give out your name, credit card number, etc. something bad is likely to happen :)

I use Microsoft Security Essentials (free) on all our Windows machines. No security on our iPhones and iPad.

Norton, McAfee, MS Security Essentials, AVG, Avast will all work to protect you. Main difference is cost (Security Essentials and the base versions of AVG and Avast are free) and impact on system performance. I've found Norton (and Symantec products in general) to be a resource hog. AVG and Avast have a smaller footprint and so leave more CPU and memory resources for your applications = faster system. The version of MSE I used was okay in this regard but I haven't used it recently. This is all Windows. I have no Mac experience other than reading about them. And the days of Macs enjoying immunity are long past. There's been at least one major botnet built using security flaws in Mac OS/X so if you run a Mac, get A-V for it. Ditto IOS (iPhone/iPad) and Android. Not many mobile viruses/malware yet but it is out there.

We use Kaspersky on our computers at home; as well as Malware bytes;  on my little netbook I just have the sympatico security that is included with my service - but it does definitely slow things down - especially at start up.  Good luck in your quest!

I am not actually on a quest. I just like to compare notes with people.

That's why I went with MSE and dropped Kaspersky. Provider anti-virus is redundant.

Full Norton.   I don't see any slowdowns, though I used to with older versions.  Also use it at work.
