Or, as George RR Martin ominously puts it in A Game of Thrones, "Winter is coming."
London got its first real snowfall of the 2011-2012 season this morning. How about the rest of the country?

No snow out here in Victoria. We do get it from time to time and it causes chaos, due to a lack of snow ploughs. Cool, cloudy, rainy -- I will take it above snow anyday.
My daughter has convinced herself that the frigid winters in Edmonton are an improvement on the coast "because they are sunny."

My son prefers snow to rain, though he'd rather have neither. For whatever reason, the cold air systems that bring snow don't trigger his headaches the way warmer systems that carry rain do.

snow here in southern Alberta, but not our first. The difference with this one is the way the wind is moving it around to decrease visibility. Not out of the ordinary for our winters, but it does challenge those on the roads.

Ugh. You can keep it, Hilary. Ours was pretty gentle in the end. A cm or less, minimal blowing. I'm hearing reports of problems in Central Ontario, though, who also had freezing rain warnings out yesterday (it poured here all day but never got cold enough to freeze).

We have some fresh stuff this morning, but we've had heavier already. The roads and sidewalks *were* fairly clear though after a while of above 0 days.

It's pretty much gone here now, though they say we could be getting more over the next week or so as temps will continue to be in the low single digits and high negatives.

we've had snow in winnipeg for about 2-3 weeks now... every so often we get a day where it goes up to +5 or so, and that melts it some, so we don't have huge piles of it yet.

As EO said - no snow here yet in Victoria (but it is fun to watch the chaos that ensues when we do get some). Today it is sunny and +7.

Snow in the mountains of Washington State. Lovely sunny weather right now with lovely 5-6 Celsius temperatures :3 We've had our inundations of Noah-flood rain (2.5 inches in one day, one street had to close in Portland Oregon) and high octane winds. Interesting geographical note: Vancouver, Portland, etc all lie in the Williamette Valley, which has its own kind of microclimate so it isn't as horribly wet as the coast is and isn't as COLD and arid as the interior is and this valley goes all the way up to the Fraser Valley.

C'est l'hiver ici.
We have had over a foot of snow for a couple of weeks now. We got a big storm two weeks ago, and we've also had wind chills below -30 already. It is spring-like now, but that won't melt the snow. Winter is here to stay in the near north of Canada.

There's not a snowflake's chance in Hell at seeing snow here this Christmas.

It must be weird that Christmas takes place in the summer in Oz.

I'm not sure if that's more unfair to us . . . or to you ?
Lot's of snow here in Manitoba . . . and it is definitely here to stay!

I will take snow any day over ice, which is what we got oodles of. I have had enough of generators, sawing, and the like to do me for a while.

What's REALLY weird is getting Christmas cards covered in snow from other Aussies.
(Just lets you know who values you the least.........the cheapest cards are those covered in snow.)

I agree, SG - when winter hits here I prefer that it stays rather than warm up, melt, and freeze again causing a covering of ice on roads and sidewalks.

no snow here in the GTA - well, it did snow for an hour on Wed morning, but the evidence had all disappeared by 2:00p.m.!
on the other hand, I hear that Whistler Blackcomb already has had 12 feet of snow at the upper levels of the mountains! they opened the season a week early in fact.
personally, I'd like to see a good snowfall - light & fluffy, oh maybe Dec. 23, disappearing when the kids go back to school in January.

The mountains in BC are doing pretty well this year - most of them are open now. There's no snow, however, here at sea level.

Apparently there was some slushy rainy snowy gunk a couple of weeks ago in Vancouver but I didn't see it. My partner was out in it in the early morning, but it cleared away quickly.

Pilgrims, you brought back a memory from childhood... learning about Christmas in other parts of the world in elementary school... so I went looking for a song:
There were six white boomers, snow white boomers
Racing Santa Claus through the blazing sun...
I'm curious. Is it a well known children's song/ story there, or just one our teacher came across?

It's a well known carol, Kimmio. Probably a newer one compared to the traditional songs, but I think I learned that one around the same time as 'I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus' and 'Grandma got run over by a reindeer'. I'm pretty sure they are all older than I am :)

Kimmio - that's definitely one I grew up with! It still makes me smile every time I hear it - especially the last verse.
Is Rolf Harris the only one who sings it, or are there other versions?

lol...I know it's a pretty old song...definately pre-70's (the 70's was when I learned it). I'm also curious as to whether or not it's a popular children's myth in Australia or if it's just part of the song. It would make sense...it''s much too warm there for the reindeer! ;)

Kimmio,
Because our climate is so different at Christmas - we've had to "invent" our own lyrics.
"Six White Boomers" got some international coverage - but we have others.
Here is one of my favourites -it reminds me of my childhood in the bush.....
_avp.push({ tagid: 'avp_zid_6', alias: '/adreactor', type: 'banner', zid: 6, pid: 47, custom1: 'Maurie+Fields', custom2: 'An+Aussie+Bush+Christmas' });
Santa arrives in his horse drawn cart
Although it's real hot he's still playin' the part
Parks in the shade of a Coolabah tree
Rubs, Hoh-hoh-hoh, then slaps his knee
The kids gather 'round in their thongs and their shorts
Black, white and brindle, they come in all sorts
The presents come out and their beauty's no fear
Santa sits down and says give us a beer
An Aussie bush Christmas is a fabulous one
No sign of snow, just hot Aussie sun
But that doesn't matter 'cause this time of year
Christmas is Christmas, even out here
Come mutton and damper and chokin' wild duck
On soft paper plates off the back of the track
The Coolgardie safe's just loaded with beer
Enough liquid amber to last 'til New Year
The pavlova's meltin', the dogs think its grouse
They've already had half of it under the house
Young Mick Maloney comes down the track
He works in the city but he always comes back
An Aussie bush Christmas is a fabulous one
No sign of snow, just hot Aussie sun
But that doesn't matter 'cause this time of year
Christmas is Christmas, even out here
We're ready to leave and the truck's loaded up
There's nothin' much left 'cept some used paper cups
Old Paddy Maloney's asleep by a log
When he wakes up, he'll be sick as a dog
The spirit of Christmas was with us today
No fir trees, no tinsel, just smiles and gidday
But Christmas is Christmas, whether big, whether small
And an Aussie bush Christmas is the best one of all
An Aussie bush Christmas is a fabulous one
No sign of snow, just hot Aussie sun
But that doesn't matter 'cause this time of year
Christmas is Christmas, even out here
