Fifty Ways to Close the Food BanksPosted on: 03/07/2013 15:31I want to join a union. No, not one of the traditional unions like the Canadian Auto Workers, who were recruiting among United Church ministers a while back. The union I want to join is The Union of Food Bank and Emergency Meal Program Volunteers. Sponsored by the York Region Food Network, they have a great web site at www.freedom90.ca. Check it out. The UFBEMPV (now doesn’t that just roll off the tongue?) has no union dues. As volunteers at food banks and emergency meal programs, members have already paid their dues. |
science, medical intervetion and realityPosted on: 03/05/2013 22:16Today, we are as much conditioned by belief in science as we are faith in religion.

Sermon for March 3 2013Posted on: 03/04/2013 11:42
Facing the Test. Text: Luke 13:1-9 Preached by Rev. James Murray at Dominion-Chalmers United Church, March 3 2013 |
A Thought For The Week of March 4Posted on: 03/04/2013 08:46"You didn’t receive a spirit of slavery to lead you back again into fear, but you received a Spirit that shows you are adopted as his children. With this Spirit, we cry, 'Abba, Father.'" (Romans 8:15) One of the first things I can remember learning about Aramaic, when I became interested enough in the Bible to wonder about some of those strange words that Jesus periodically used, was that "Abba" meant, sort of, "daddy." It was an affectionate and intimate term that Jesus used to refer to God. It pointed out the special relationship between, in trinitarian terms, the Father and the Son. |
What Do We Believe in the United Church of CanadaPosted on: 03/03/2013 23:06CBC Radio included a commentary on advertising campaigns and approaches used by different churches, and included a comment that, as much as most young people support the positions of the United Church of Canada on issues such as homosexuality and the environment, most also perceived the United Church as having no clear beliefs. This provoked me to reflecting on what I thought could go in a belief statement by the United Church. |

Getting Along With AtheistsPosted on: 02/26/2013 23:41I am a layperson at St. David's United Church in Woodstock, Ontario where they let me preach one sermon a year (in the summer when attendance is low). I preached this sermon because I often get rather annoyed with the attitude by some, that Christianity is “the one true religion” and all other paths lead to oblivion. |
