We will post new updates in this thread as they arise so that you are aware of what the team is up to. This is also the thread where you can ask questions about those updates or the technology.

Changed my password!

Posted on: 05/03/2014 21:49
So does this mean that "password" is now free for me to use since you are no longer using it any longer?

I kike "incorrect" because if you forgot it prompts you. " Your password is incorrect".

I'm sitting in a hotel room avoiding work, but, here are a few of the technical updates.
The software licensed is XenForo: https://xenforo.com/
It is being hosted at CrocWeb: https://www.crocweb.com/
xenForo is rather robust which bodes well for the application being able to meet even the most discerning needs. It also means that the team needs to be focussed on administration configuration, testing, etc.

This thread is getting no love. Everyone loves the other thread instead.

It is the sad bit about techs.....they ignore us when it works, they hate us when it doesn't.

OOOH, I will say that I played with the equivalent of wondermail in the new forum. It was really sweet. Sent Mendalla an email. Intentionally did not send it to chansen. i wanted to talk behind his back and plan a takeover!

oooh, and just saw how replies are shown to existing threads. I liked it!
Very easy to see and navigate -- from main site. lovely!

ooooh, and you can tag someone in a post, so I can say @crazyheart - you would like this....
Lunch is over, need to get back to work...but the new software is going to be sweet!

Yeah, I'm liking the pm and editing functions over there a lot. We need more smileys, though. Are there add-on smiley libraries or something we can add? I can research if you two have other things to deal with. I'm a smiley addict.

Yes, I saw you can add/import and there are smiley libraries out there.
I say, go for it!

chemgal, on your volunteer post, I think we will need someone to volunteer to write tips & techniques and accept them from others.
Someone good at writing, someone who loves writing quick instructions for folks, etc.....and is good at remembering what it is like to not just "get it".
We had one of those threads on this site for a while. I know that I had made one, then, i think there were a few others that did..

Some good news for the smartphone crowd. I tried accessing Xenforo using my antique (as in >3 years old) Blackberry and it worked fairly well even on the tiny screen (it's a Bold so a small screen with a physical keyboard). Was able to respond to a thread, access various screens, and even use the moderation tools to sticky a thread. Will need to be tested with Android and iPhone as well but the former uses Chrome as its browser so should be okay. I have two Android tablets, a 7" and a 10", that I can test it on. I'll hunt down someone with an iPhone and an iPad when we get into testing phase to try it out on them.

How will the notification come to crazyheart (or whoever)? Can a person untag him/herself after seeing the thread?
Pinga

Alerting is something you configure based on what the admins say is doable and the software supports.
A lot of that is being understood still; however, here is some of hte functionality that I have seen.
You can get email or just online (ie loggedin), better than here, more visible.
You can follow forums for any new posts to certain forums
You can follow threads
You can be notified if you are tagged, but that doesn't imply you will then get multiple notifications for the thread (ie, it isn't like facebook - thank God)
Basically, Hilary, it depends on your preferences.

oooh, and I tested on iphone, works great.

Admins are now using the new forum for their technical discussions and activities. This allowed us to move out of email for our to-do's, etc.
That is partially why you are seeing the excited notes from us....

Does the new software have an anonymous "like" feature?
chansen
Posted on: 05/10/2014 11:45
It does. It is enabled by default. I can disable it, and was intending to disable it, per earlier conversations about this not being Facebook.
There is also a trophy system where you accumulate virtual "trophies" by your participation in the forums at whatever milestones for posting we set. I'm not big on those, and figured I'd disable them as well.
Any opinions?
Neo
Posted on: 05/10/2014 12:14
I like the idea of an anonymous like feature. Of course this isn't Facebook, but who cares.. Facebook uses the "identified" like, but an "anonymous" like seems more appropriate for a forum like this.

Looking forward to taking the forum out for a spin, btw. Do you have an eta for the beta?
Pinga
Posted on: 05/10/2014 12:24
Beta testing is currently being scheduled around May 23rd....There are items that have to be ticked off before then, such as moderators taking it for a spin. (figure we need some moderators to be able to practice their skills!)

I also like the "recently active" list on the right of the screen in this current forum. I don't usually monitor some of the forums here, but do often see something of interest there.

The site is not available at this time to anyone other than admins.

Thank you for your reply WC2-Admin Pinga.
The message I received was, "Error: HTTP 503: Service unavailable."

It's fine this morning but, as Pinga says, we'll announce when you can start accessing it for routine use. From that error, it could have been chansen or the host doing some kind of work.

No issues at the moment. Could have been anything from your isp to someone tripping over the power cord for the server.

Honestly, Jae? If IT people rather than marketing people ran things, Apple and Android would be well behind Blackberry. They've been doing this smartphone thing longer and know how to build one that is secure, robust, and capable. I'll take a Blackberry Q10 over an iPhone any day, with a Galaxy or Nexus falling somewhere in between. Hell, I'll take my four year-old Bold 9780 over an iPhone. Alas, I am likely to be getting the Galaxy since I pack company heat and the app we want to use for our CRM system isn't developing for BB.
