Hey everyone!
Have people heard of this whole 59 cent campaign? (See here if not:
It's in reaction to one of the (many) cuts in the omnibus budget bill (getting passed tomorrow, is it?) that basically takes away refugee healthcare coverage for preventative diagnostics, etc. Ultimately it boils their coverage down to travel-insurance-like needs, where only emergency situations are covered.
And that's only for 'official' refugees and claimants that are from 'designated' countries. The real issue is refugees that come from 'non-designated countries of origin'; they will no longer be covered for emergency services (aka hospital coverage). That means if they have a stroke, if they're having a baby, if they're having a heart attack or insulin shock... they are NOT COVERED. They are only covered if it affects public health (like TB, etc.). The 59 cent campaign is based on the calculation to cover at least these very basic, urgent needs.
Doctors and other health specialists are protesting against the cut, saying that by cutting preventative care the bill will actually INCREASE medical costs. The Harper Government insists that refugees should not be covered for more than regular Canadians... a point that has spawned some really incredible commentary. (I'm one of those weirdos that likes getting riled after reading news article online comments.) Personally, I don't see why the Government isn't more interested in making the healthcare of 'regular Canadians' match by giving them an equal system (eye care, dental and prescription drugs were originally covered for all refugees)... instead of taking away from those who have it and need it. Desperately. But hey... I'm fully aware of how controversial the issue of immigrants and refugees is. Bring on the conversation.
Anyway, the 59 cent campaign is (unofficially) related to the UCC Take Action (See here: http://www.united-church.ca/getinvolved/takeaction/120504) against the cuts, and is a pretty fun, slightly sassy, way of making a point... with spare change. He he he... change for change!
Anyway, what do we all think? Let the discussion begin!

Nice one, InannaWhimsey.
And may I just note that wouldn't this be a cheeky way to send your pennies back to the government, now that they're supposedly being phased out?

Faerenach,
Thanks for posting this.
Canadians, do not hear "Ottawa backs down" and think it means it is done. It is not!
The governmental back down only applies to impoverished refugees resettled to Canada through government and private sponsorships.
Those who are not resettled or sponsored that way, those awaiting process or appeals and deportation are not covered and neither are those who come from Ottawa’s yet-to-be-defined “safe countries” — likely including Mexico, Hungary and Czech Republic.
How quick do we forget Veronica Castro?
So, hmm... who comes from Hungary and the Czech Republic? Oh Hungary is the #1 country of origin of refugee claimants.
Oh, the Roma, the ones the UN keeps talking about being 'targeted' and speaks of anti-Roma demonstrations and hate speech...
Some of whom live in refugee camps in Kosovo....
The folks the UN criticized France for the collective deportations of and discriminatory political speeches about...
The same folks Amnesty International cite as persecuted and targeted, resettled, evicted, deported...

Ah, maybe we only know Romani people by the deragatory term "gypsies"
Reminds me of the Holocaust and Rwanda and lessons apparently not yet learned.
Some groups of refugees will not have access to care even for serious conditions.
I know, as an ex-pat American, what it is to pray, "Dear God, let it stop bleeding, I cannot afford stitches". I have seen people tuck fat back into deep lacerations and stuff a rag into the hole. I have sat with a mother as she sobbed and prayed it was not her crying child's appendix as they had waves of excruciating pain.
I would not wish it on my worst enemy, valid claim or rejected claim....
So, I will sponsor refugees and urge others to...
Send 59 cents and say, "I wll pay for a refugee."
Send 2.95 and say, "we will pay for a family of five."
Send 59.00 and say, "we will pay for ten."
590.00 = 100 refugees.
Send a message loud and clear, "You keep talking about a mandate from the people. THIS IS NOT MY MANDATE!"
Chretein backed down with hockey pucks and Harper will with pennies from heaven
