David in the cave

Reading about Davids life is like watching a soap opera. He made mistakes. Many mistakes but yet was called a man after Gods own heart.

I have been reading the psalms lately. It seems unthinkable that Saul would be so jealous of David that he was trying to have him killed. A prince of Egypt sleeping in caves like a homeless person.

So here are some more unanswerable questions:

1. Why didn't God put David on the throne and protect him from Saul right away?

2. Why didn't God forgive Saul from seeking advice from his dead mentor Samuel. What I wouldn't give to get advice from my parents one more time.

These unanswerable questions lead me to believe that God was not so different back then. Also leads me to believe the David stories r highly mytholized and not 100 percent factual.

Our cave that we are hiding in could be grief. Davids feelings of God not being around and King Saul trying to kill him are probobly highly exaggerated. Cave is a metaphor for hiding place.

Davids psalms are more than poetry. They are what we would call modern day journalling.

Please feel free to comment on my interpretation of the myth, add your own interpreration, or share.

Remember that the story is of a civil war and David could easily be seen as either hero or traitor.  He is trying to oust the current king.  It is most likely history theologized

Hi Serena---Remember- --(-David in the cave)---David didn't want to kill Saul, I Believe David Love Saul He was Davids King. When he was youg he stayed with King Saul and sang to him, that made Saul relax. Saul was hunting David and wanted to kill him .David was a warrior now and could easly kill Saul . But he hid, an cut a piece of his robe off  The King .----------------------------------------

1Sa 24:11 See, my father, see the skirt of your robe in my hand; for by the fact that I cut off the skirt of your robe, and did not kill you, you may know and see that there is no wrong or treason in my hands. I have not sinned against you, though you hunt my life to take it.

Please take note, David called him father , because He was The Head or Leader of Israel   On earth .David was not scared or would He ever kill Saul. This shows me the Love one Brother was showing another .Even well the other brother was trying to kill Him . You see Serena  they where both Kings.

History theologized.  Yes that makes sense.   Civil war can be pretty bad.  War is pretty bad.  Unimaginably bad.

Yes.  I know that David did not want to kill Saul.  Saul was older than David too so David had the advantage.

Saul was David's mentor though.  Saul was also David's father in law and David sat at the royal table many times for supper with him very likely.  Yes, we think we have problems.   :)  Imagine a father in law trying to have his son in law killed.

Mythology is far less than 100% factual. It metaphorically expresses what is deeply felt but factually inexpressible.

Some mythology may be based loosely on historical events, but it is mainly metaphorical. All of the ancient world, and the Middle East in particular, had a tradition of teaching by way of metaphor. In Hebraic, this metaphorical teaching is known as midrash. Most of the OT and much of the NT were written and are to be contemplated as midrash.

Hi - Arminius-- I think you may be wrong this time . From what I understand a midrash is storeys told about something that may or may not have happened. Or Made up to make some one or something look better.I would agree that most of the Middle east in particular may lie, or if you will tell storeys ,of there God. But the Israellites and those that are christian Follow a living God ,  and He would soon make sure we changed it.As far as for David and  Saul .I Believe it ment far to much to the Israelites to make up a storey.Saul sat on the throne of Israel He was King . David sat on the throne of Israel he was king.  Jesus will sett on the throne of Israel Because He Is King of ISRAEL.

Yes, airclean33, that's what I meant: midrash is stories about something that may or may not have happened, and the meaning of the stories is discerned by us through prayer, meditation, contemplation, and discussion, much like we do here on the Cafe.

According to historians, David was a ruthless king who cruelly subjugated the surrounding small kingdoms and made Israel into a Mid-Eastern superpower.
