Well, your Omni is finally leaving the nest (sort of).
I'm off to Grant MacEwan to join the illustrious ranks of those who don't know what they want to do! General Studies ho!
So if any wondergatherings happen in Edmonton - or by extension Alberta - during the year, I'm IN!
Onward, the revolution (that is life)!!

Good luck Omni. After reading your profile I suspect that you're going to succeed at anything you set out to do. It is, by the way, one of the most comprehensive profiles I've ever read, impressive. I don't think I could write that much about myself.

Looks good! I think you're doing university the right way!
When I entered university, I pretty much just continued high school courses (math, physics, English, etc). Over the years, to fill up electives, I took things like world religions, intro to macroeconomics, and sociology in education -- and I was kinda pissed at myself, because I found I really liked these classes, but I had zero room to fit more like them in my schedule. If I could do it all over again, I'd take a wide variety of courses like you've got listed here!

I also have only a bit of money I've saved for general emergencies. And I need to get a job there or I won't have money for food (LOL).
So first on my list is a Job. Then a girlfriend. Unless the girlfriend feeds me, then girlfriend > job :P
I actually had one of my female friends recommend I befriend as many women as possible, and they might cook/bake for me lol (she cooked/baked for people the last two years).

I loved working at the campus library - easy, good access to resources, awesome biceps from lifting big journals to top shelves... not much money, but easy to get to.

My roommate makes the best burgers ever! I'm looking for just a simple cashier/customer assistance job to tide me over and help line my pockets (read: belly).
I'm thinking of asking around in the school, but there are also tons of stores literally ten feet away from grant mac that I could go look at as well.
I am definitely enriched by being a Councillor, I even kept my name plaque and used it on my door with sticky tack :P
Anyone who I have on facebook can see the picture album I just put up (and will continue to add to) that has pictures of my dorm.
And on top of all this it is Eid, Ramadan is over! Eid Mubarak!

There was a big hug, I hope you don't feel weird about that, as I probly would hug you if we met. Mr Northwind even almost got a hug!)
I'm excited for you in this new big chapter. Best wishes young man! You'll soon be an Edmontonian! Or at least part Edmontonian...

Good luck Omni! As Bethany said, on campus jobs are good and often pay a little better than outside retail type jobs. My friend worked in a campus bookstore for about 15 bucks an hour and that was several years ago. I would check with student services and/or with student financial aide. That's where you'll most likely find the job postings. Also, you might want to find out if there are any private bursaries available for new students to help pay for costs. I remember getting a small one when I went to college...a couple of hundred dollars, but it really helped me in the beginning.

Well so far things are going fantastic! I thoroughly enjoyed orientation week! Tons of awesome experiences like canoeing down the north Saskatchewan whilst singing "the Last Saskatchewan Pirate" by the Arrogant Worms, laser tag, wings, wings, more wings, meeting people, parties on floor 2, meeting more people, all kinds of goodness!
I had my first two days of classes yesterday and today. I think I'm going to really enjoy them, English, History, Sociology and Economics. All the teachers seem like they aren't Education Nazis and seem to have quirks which will keep me interested if nothing in the material we cover actually does (which is highly unlikely!).
Even though orientation week is over, there is still so much to do! There is the annual 'fall fest' starting tomorrow. I'm volunteering at it! And on Friday, Mother Mother is playing! I get to see them live for free!
And I've looked into a couple awards and bursuries and found several that I can apply to. Any ones that require you to be related to someone to served in the armed forces (dad and grandpa) for example. Also I found one that just requires you to do lots of volunteering at Grant MacEwan. Volunteering is my middle name!
I'll keep you all posted!

Oh I also had to drop one of my sociology courses because I didn't actually have the prerequisites... I was taking them concurrently but that didn't fly. On the plus side, I have a little more time, I can take a nap before lunch and not worry about sleeping past my afternoon class, and I get reimbursed for the money I paid (which could just turn out to be a life saver).
I also got a Commerce Club discount card today. $10.00 and it gets me anywhere between 10-30% discounts on food and clothes and stuff at like 50 different locations in Edmonton!

Omni, taking them at the same time only works if one is a corequisite. There are tons of scholarships and bursaries that look for campus and/or community involvement. Paid work is ok to, so being a councilor should help you out tons! I'm glad your first week is going so well.
Me - I'm missing the quiet campus from the summer. The beer gardens wasn't what I was in the mood to see, especially considering it was a pretty late night at work today.

I've already started volunteering! I was at the Fall Fest today for five and a half hours. I got to see Dragonette live, and bought the CD of a folk-esque one-man act; Kim Churchill. I would highly suggest looking him up!
And I'm going to back at it tomorrow after classes. And I get to see Mother Mother!!!! I'M SO EXCITED!!!!
Plus I'm meeting a couple people tomorrow to borrow/buy used textbooks. Then I'm going to go to the bookstore and suffer the line ups to get the few books I can't get second hand.
Onwards and upwards!

The_Omnissiah
Posted on: 09/14/2011 00:32
I got some cheap textbooks from people but I'm still on the look out.
Classes are going well, I'm enjoying them and relishing the University style work (i.e. Lecture, class over, do assignments, repeat). I don't know if I mentioned this already but the only word to describe my (male) Romanian microeconomics teacher is; cute.
Or perhaps adorable, that guy is just so... cute! He makes the most childish slide-shows and makes the most silly examples, and has a straight face 83% of the time he's talking about them!
So it's my birthday tomorrow and for once in the past couple years, I'm in a place where my friends are abundant. That being said, many of them still won't be able to come because they are either busy or we have kinda drifted apart. On the plus side I'm making lots of friends here at Residence!
I even got complimented on my shirt the other day in the hallway... ...by a girl! :P
Now if I can just organize the debaters here and create a club, this year will be off to the best possible start!
