WonderCafe Advent Calendar: December 20

Good day. okay, today’s topic is Advent Calendars, eh?

Bob and Doug McKenzie, “The Twelve Days of Christmas”

A few days I said that John Denver and the Muppets’ version of “The Twelve Days of Christmas” was among the best ever done. Another really good one, though for different reasons is, of course, Bob and Doug McKenzie’s rendition of it on the 1981 Great White North Album.

If you grew up during the hosermania that was the winter of 1981-92, you’ll remember this album, in particular the song “Take Off” which finds Geddy Lee of Rush singing with Bob and Doug (this song was the number one single in Canada and even reached #3 in the Billboard charts). But the album also has a Christmas-themed track and their attempt at “Twelve Days” is so great and if you don’t think so, you can, well, take off, hoser.

Bob and Doug’s version substitutes ordinary Canadian things for the traditional festive offering: packs of smokes, golden toques (which was actually funny and observant back in the day when practically everyone owned a gold toque from Midas Muffler), back bacon and, of course, beer.

Like everyone on the planet—and especially everyone who has ever drank a few stubby bottles of Molson—they can’t name, much less remember all the days while they sing it. Good thing there’s a very helpful choir.

Enjoy Bob and Doug in all their awesome hoserness. The YouTube clip includes some fun amateur narration but to really experience it is we did back in the day, shut your eyes and listen to Bob and Doug and think of stubbies of Molson Golden and plaid flannel.

Beauty, eh?
