A song for the days when you’re blue.
 
Joni Mitchell – “River”
 
There are days, anytime really but in the run-up to Christmas in particular, where things just don’t go right. When you feel a failure and your failings cost you. When all you have left are the bittersweet memories of the good things. When life becomes a treadmill. When all the sentimentality surrounding you just seems like bullshit.
 
That’s why we have songs like Joni Mitchell’s “River”
 
 

 
And sometimes that’s enough.
 
The amazing thing about “River” is that it’s not a Christmas song, though it’s set at Christmas, and yet we’ve culturally adopted it as a one; lots of artists do covers of it on their Christmas albums, perhaps to add some legitimacy, or reality, to the venture. Or maybe because it’s one of the most gorgeous songs in the world. And that too is also, sometimes, enough.
