Please Share: Spam (not) from UCCan service providers

Please Share this with anyone/everyone: The United Church's service providers will NEVER email you (unless you are actually expecting them to; that's a different story). Currently, email using ADP's name is being circulated around Canada: THIS IS SPAM. DELETE IT: do not click any links in this email.

If you aren't sure, by all means CALL ADP, or your bank, insurance company or other company.

In the case of the United Church's service providers, there have been a number of calls about an email, purportedly from ADP, soliciting action from the recipient.  This is NOT a legitimate request.

The spammers do not have "access" to our database, they are guessing that you have a connection to ADP, because one of every 3 or 4 Canadians does have one: either through payroll services, or other ADP services.

Sometimes they are correct, and you DO have a connection to the company they're pretending to be. In another classic example, the 'Royal Bank' is used. This is the largest of the major Canadian banks, and so a 'good guess' as a bank you may use.

Spam email is frequently used to breach security settings on your computers and steal information, often personal identification, passwords and other information that can be used in nefarious ways.

To 'get into' a computer, the email is designed to look like a real piece of information from a trusted source, like:

  • a bank
  • an insurer
  • a service provider for telecommunications, like a phone company, or an internet provider

None of these institutions will EVER email you out of the blue, or 'cold'.

Please protect yourself and do not click through any links in these kinds of email.

(bump)

Ministry and Employment are still hearing some occasional reports of this email popping up, so I'm bumping this notification.

Please remember that unless you are actually Expecting an email from ANY financial institution or service provider: any bank, any insurance company, any credit card company, not to mention ADP, Green Shield or Aon Hewitt...DELETE AND IGNORE.

If it is a truely important matter, the organization will 'snail mail' to you directly or telephone you. If you are not certain, or are uncomfortable with ignoring the email, please call your contact number for your local branch, or customer service centre for that institution for more details (do NOT use a number from the questionable email, if there is one).

And if you still really are not sure, please contact Ministry and Employment at GCO.
