Agreed with Gord - neither option really works. My real answer is that yes I think we should find alternatives, but in all honesty no my habits aren't really going to change because of this. My "no" has nothing to do with oil keeping the economy afloat and everything to do with just not being sure what changes I could realistically make that I haven't already made.

Not only do neither of the suggested answers work, at this point in time there really is no practical answer to our dependance on oil. Yes, we may dream of alternative energy sources to fuel our daily activities, but just like perpetual motion is a non-reality, any alternative energy system is going to have a significant enviromental impact.
When I was a young man, I was told the oceans were so vast we could not possibly pollute them. We now know that is untrue. Likewise the pundits of so called green energy will also be shown that there really is no such thing as "green energy"
So we will continue to use oil until we find something else that is a reasonable economic alternative. That is not to say we should not use oil wisely.
