Is it better to give or receive?

Yes, there is joy in receiving a gift, especially if it is a much desired or needed item.

but this doesn't not compare the the joy in choosing the perfect gift and seeing the recipient light up when she receives it (or imagining the joy if you cannot be there).

Giving means that you have the means to give.  You have been blessed with enough to provide yourself with the necessities of life and now you have something to share - something to give away to enrich the life of another.

We like to give.  We like to fill shoe-boxes with toys and trinkets to send to a poor child in a distant country imagine she face as she opens the box to see the first doll that she has ever had for her very own.  We like to pick angels off trees and fulfill a child's dream.  We like to prepare a box with a turkey, cranberries, vegetables, pies to leave on a doorstep and provide a Christmas dinner.  We like to imagine the man at the shelter receiving our box with new socks and underwear, a bag of candy, some razors and shaving cream.

Its so much better to be able to give these gifts than to be on the receiving end.

I'd rather give.  I find the most satisfaction in giving a gift to someone, whether it's tangible like a birthday present, or my time or support.   I really don't care if I receive anything because when I give to someone, I receive the best gift ever...the look of joy or the tears of relief on their face when they receive it.  That alone is worth more to me than anything.

I'd rather give than receive.

In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’Acts 20:35

It's the blessing that accumulates in the treasury of Heaven.
