I came across this term to describe what happens to famous people when they become jerks through the adoration of swathes of fans, and it's effect on their mental health and wellfare. As we know, some have ended up dead, others go through serious drug addiction, depression, multiple failed mariages, etc, etc.

Nowadays one can find our old pop icons on the internet, read what they say, and write to them. This is something new. I mean we were always able to find a fan club or write to an author's publisher, or a band's manager, if you could find an address that is, but one would never expect a reply. Nowadays the famous are out there on the internet like every other normal person, available to be talked to, and we occasionally stumble upon them.
