Many congregations in The United church of Canada follow the "Revised Common Lectionary". Here are the suggested scriptures for August 23rd, 2009 (sometimes known as "Pentecost 12", sometimes known as "Proper 16"):

Every Tuesday a group at St. Andrew's Haney meet together to explore scripture - specifically the focus scripture for the coming Sunday. As the primary worship leader, I've found it really helpful to my preparatory work.

This is something that's been bugging me for quite some time. Digging through the bible, I've noticed a lot of verses that, even to me, seem pretty ridiculous. Some verses even seem to go against the Christian belief system (not allowing those with handicaps to be in leadership, not allowing women to play certain roles.)
