So a Baptist church in the American state of Kentucky is giving away guns as door prizes in hopes of attracting more converts to Jesus Christ.
Can someone tell me what’s wrong with that?
Over the years I have seen many inducements used by churches to bring people into their buildings. I have seen magicians, balloon and aeroplane rides. I have seen food used as attractant. And I have seen giveaways of all kinds from pens to iPods. But I have never heard or seen of guns used in this way.
Among all the Facebook postings I have viewed in the days since the Newtown murders, one of the most astute went something like this: “When the Second Amendment was being written it took three minutes to reload a musket and during that time you could rush the guy and kick the crap out of him.” Much has changed since the end of the 18th century, but the largest shift is the amount of personal wealth. And it is fully linked to the emergence of gun culture in North America.
Please share this prayer for the children and for all those whose lives have been affected by Friday's elementary school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.
I know Social is not the place to do heavy topics but Politics and the posters are not cutting it for me these days.
On Piers Morgan last night and I will be paraphrasing some one on the panel who was against gun control used this argument. It made me upset.
He said Most Americans who haVe guns in their homes have a devoted attachment to their guns. They revere them. They say to themselves ( he said) Look at me I have weapons in my home that are dangerous but look what a good guy I am. I can control any killing urge I have.
I don't know how to process the horrible events that transpired yesterday in Norway. What thoughts or actions does your theology call you into?
Wasn't quite sure where to post this - it's a story from Toronto Star this week about Rosedale United Church & how it commissioned an artist to create some garden tools from gun barrels ...

I picked my daughter (age 3 1/2) up from daycare last week and she'd had a rough day. Normally we only hear good stuff but that day, whoosh, she'd whacked one kid and thrown food, tried to induce a coo against another child...the works. It was, as I said, a rough day and we talked a lot about what had happened that day. Part of it that seemed to contribute to it was two of her boy daycare friends suddenly deciding to turn on the girls, chase them with pretend guns while yelling that they were going to kill them.
I have a problem with this.
Apparently, we just missed Bring your Gun to Church day.
