Sermon
Luke 4:18-19
18 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has appointed me to preach Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the downtrodden will be freed from their oppressors, 19 and that the time of the Lord's favour has come.
Pressing On!!
Phil 3:12-14
12 I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. 13 No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.
Christ’s Strength in our Weakness
2 Cor 12:7b-10
In the Abilities Church we like to quote the last line of this text, “when I am weak then I am strong”. After all, the core message of the Abilities church is that those with disabilities have something vital to contribute to the Church. This is an important message and something I affirm, but we need to understand the context and where our strength comes from.
1. Paul’s Thorn
What will you give your heart to this fall?
Preached by Rev. James Murray at Dominion-Chalmers United Church,
Labour Day Sunday, Sept. 6 2009. Texts: James 2:1-17 Mark 7:24-37
A ten year old boy and his eight year old brother were constantly getting into trouble. Their parents were at their wits’end. In desperation, they decided to take their boys to see the minister. The minister asked if he could talk to the boys separately. The eight year old boy was called into the minister’s study first. The minister looked him straight in the eyes and asked, “Young man, do you know where God is?” The boy’s eyes widened, but he made no reply.
This is a sermon on love & narcissism. It is a traditional theme that I find is often missed in more contemporary, New Age versions of the Christian message. This particular sermon is based on Jonah 3:10-4:11 and Matthew 20:1-16. Hopefully it will spark discussion.
