Buddha taught the Middle Way. Part of that Middle Way teaches that body functions should be respected insofar as health requires but that concern for those functions should never be allowed to obstruct single minded progress towards liberation.
The famous Fire Sermon expresses in vivid form the need to turn away in utter aversion from everything in our nature which is on fire with craving so that we may achive the "coolness" of Nirvana.
I'm looking at taking a service at my UU fellowship in the next couple months. It will be another "Four Elements" topic and I find myself leaning towards Fire. Earth should be next but Fire is calling out to me. It's the most energetic and exciting of the bunch with a very rich set of myths and images to explore. You might say I'm burning with the desire to do this topic.
I love the rythym of the Church Seasons - Advent;Christmas, Ephipany, Lent, 50 days of Easter, leading to Pentecost - the birth of the church.
At your church do you celebrate the day of Pentecost with Red, wind and fire?
Do lay people lead the service because many times this is Annual meeting weekend?
What are your favorite things about Pentecost?
