Happy Spring. This is one of my favourite times of year. In spite of the fact that there is still a foot of snow on the ground. It is slowly starting to melt. Soon there will be green grass and new leaves and spring flowers. Heck I am even looking forward to seeing my first dandelion.
Spring is one of my favorite times of year, for many reasons. One of those reasons is eating wild spring greens. Nothing picks a body up after a long wet winter like a bowl of spring greens soup.
Over the last few weekends we have managed to store away a lot of our favorite. Young nettles, and fiddleheads mostly, with wild raspberry leaves for tea.
To be honest I hate April - I shouldn't April should be a wonderful fun month full of promise and rebirth - but I always spend the first half plodding away, fingers clicking rapidly, entering figures and calculations, all for the benefit of group of yahoos in Ottawa who take my blood, sweat and tears and turn it into guns and pork.
Now, the prgamatic among you will say - well, why not keep up every month - which is a valid question and my response is - why should I make every month depressing!
I hope!
For those that live in sunny climes, I awoke this morning to a cold north wind and falling snow - go ahead, be green with glee.
For my fellow northerners, I found this cartoon yesterday (did I mention that I get to surf the net looking for cartoons at work - I love my job)...
This week I looked out the window and there they were - a whole flock - about 3 dozen! - beautiful robin red-breasts in my crab apple tree in the front yard! They were feasting on the remaining little apples, and thoroughly enjoying themselves in the sunshine.
Any signs of spring in your neighbourhood yet?
