Diana Butler Bass Book

About a year ago a number of us filled out a questionaire for Diana's new book. Amazon has notified me that her book is now available and so I have two copies on order - one for me, the other for the church down the road that won't change. When you have read it how about dropping off some comments here. I think they will likely fit in well with Rishi's long running topic of the church dieing or changing.

What were some of your favorite books from 2011

Trishcuit's 2012 reading list topic got me thinking about some of the books I read last year and I was wondering what books everyone enjoyed last year.

What is on your reading list for 2012?

I am currently working on War and Peace, and enjoying it more than I expected.  (It's on the eReader so what the heck.)

Sometime over the course of the year I have my sights set on " The House of Silk".  Horowitz has written a new Sherlock Holmes mystery that has gotten good reviews, for it  has a very similar feel to the origional Conan Doyle style. I have read all the others, the originals, Hounds of the Baskervilles included.

The Blaikie Report

The Blaikie Report: An Insider's Look at Faith and Politics, a new book from United Church minister and politician Bill Blaikie, has recently been released by United Church Publishing House. It's gotten off to a great start, with two well-attended book signings in Ottawa and another in Toronto.

Lesbian Christain/Christian Lesbian Books

I'm looking for recommendations for books about the relationship between LGPT people (preferably lesbians) and Christianity. I'm especially interested in theology and scripture.

Looking through my shelf the other day, I realised that I have lots of queer theory and lots of books about Christianity, but the two never meet.

I'm hoping you all have thoughts and recommendations on this.

Excerpt: August Farewell – The Last Sixteen Days of a Thirty-Three-Year Romance by David G. Hallman

August Farewell – The Last Sixteen Days of a Thirty-Three-Year Romance by David G. Hallman

It was August 7, 2009, when the doctor stood at the foot of the hospital bed and with a deliberation that was both efficient and compassionate, looked directly at David Hallman and his partner Bill Conklin and said, "Our diagnosis is pancreatic cancer, stage four." In his thoughtful and deeply personal memoir, David Hallman narrates the sixteen days after Bill was diagnosed with terminal cancer and intersperses vignettes drawn from their thirty-three years together as a gay couple.

Summer Reading

Anyone done some interesting reading at the cottage or just lounging around at home? My summer reading:

Princess of Mars & Gods of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs - Civil War vet travels to Mars via out-of-body experience and becomes a great hero and adventurer among the various peoples of the red planet. A seminal work of sf/fantasy. Movie coming out next spring that appears to be Princess with some elements of Gods thrown in.

Writing A Book

When I was 15-16 years old I wrote a short story for english class at my high school in Toronto. Seeing that I skipped school all the time and that I was in a gang, the teacher didn't think I could accomplish such a feat. So after reading it she accused me of plagiarism. Having a wicked anger problem, I let loose all the curse words I knew. She called my mom and sure enough she released that I indeed wrote that story. I received the highest marks.
