Greece's Ailing Economy Grinds to a Halt

Bear with me if this comes out not so neat, due to my injured arm. The article is from the Financial Times (based in London, England):

Last week, Medical Service Limited, a small Athens’ supplier of medical equipment that can no longer afford to pay its employees, received what should have been a blessing: an order from one of the city’s hospitals for a heart monitoring machine.

US debt compromise

The US debt compromise is a disaster for everybody but the very rich. Obama, if he ever had any principles (and I never thought he did), has abandoned them.

Most of the American population is going to suffer severely - and for a long time. But corporate returns will probably remain solid - so it technically won't be a depression - just a lot of very poor and desperate people.

Decision -- Car Purchase

So, my car is really telling me it needs replacing.  It needs to go to a home that doesn't demand a reliable car.

saving capitalism

It's interesting to read conservative newspapers, and to see how they blame our economic woes on social spending. That is, they blame the recession on the poor. That''s surely remarrcalbe that such a disorganized and, well, poor group could have such an effect on national and international affairs.

The reality is that such opinion is as silly as anything Marx wrote. It's quite the same sort of one sze fits all nonsense. Most isms, liberalism, conservatism, capitalism, communism, socialism are pretty silly in their one size fits all approach.

Do Not Use Your Computer at Work

So a grade four teacher was charged with prostitution.  Is the economy really that bad?  She WAS employed and not earning under the poverty line.

Then to meet the guy during one of her spares at school and use the school computer to arrange the tryst.  I don't know how dumb people can be.

Real Estate Alberta

Glad I stuck it out with the real estate market in Alberta.

Where investors are loosing money along with their shirts its good to know that real estate is the last thing you will see getting lost (shirts, money).

I actually started up www.AlbertaHomesListed.com in order to help people find realtors in their respective areas. This isn't the MLS by any means but it sure helps out other realtors when people have spoken to a professional and are already preapproved.

A Biblical Approach to the Economic Crisis

[Ed. note: Originally published as "From Anxiety and Greed to Milk and Honey," in the February 2009 issues of Sojourners magazine, (800) 714-7474, www.sojo.net. Reprinted with permission.]

So far as I know, the Bible says nothing explicit about subprime loans and the financial implications of such risky economic practice. There is a great deal, nonetheless, that the Bible has to say about such a crisis as we now face. I will comment in turn on a biblical perspective of an analysis of the crisis and a biblical perspective for an alternative economic practice.

While the specifics of the current market collapse are peculiarly modern, biblical perspectives are pertinent because the fundamental issues of economics are constant from ancient to contemporary time, constants such as credit and debt, loans and interest, and the endless tension between haves and have-nots.
We may identify three dimensions of the theological-moral foundations of the current economic crisis:

Explain to me again why Harper is supposed to be good at handling economic issues?

List of things he said about the economy.  At least he caught on eventually.

Myth/Fact: He said it!? PM Harper's 2008 economic comments

1. On Sept. 15, 2008, Stephen Harper said, 'My own belief is if we were going to have some kind of crash or recession, we probably would have had it by now.'

Impact of economy shifts to you personally or within a few degrees of separation

I'm curious what people are experiencing in terms of the shifts.

Some of you may have seen a real decrease in your mutual funds.

I know that I did not get a raise this year, with the economy having been cited.

I also know that stock options, that I generally trade in at this time of year, I won't be...as stock is so low..not worth trading in...

so...what is impacting you or your family or immediate friends?
