A Little Inspiration

Graduating University

This was one of the most proud moments in my life. Attending all classes, getting good grades, ignoring my social life and being a nerd finally paid off. I received that piece of paper, walked across the stage as they said my name, gave a smile and was ready to take the next step into finding a career.

On-line courses

I was wondering if any of you folks out there have had any experience with on-line courses?  I'm thinking of approaching my employer about taking a program on-line at Algonquin College, but I don't know if that kind of learning is right for me.  The program isn't available here and I don't like to take the time away from my family to take a part-time program anyway.

Your input would be appreciated, thanks.

To Read or Not To Read

My daughter turned 3 less than a month ago and for the past few months has started trying to read.  She knows the sounds to most of the letters and is trying to sound out the words in her books.  (She has trouble running the sounds together to form the words still though.)  I was quite surprised when she started to do this, so I asked her preschool teacher about it.  The advice she gave me was to not focus on that aspect of learning and to start doing lots of arts related activities with her.  It is her opinion that if she learns to read thi

What do you thing of the Education system?

So I was just wondering what people think of the education system and how it works. Do you think students should have grades or marks? It seems like students don't learn as much as they could because they focus on getting good grades, instead of actually understanding a subject. For example, cramming information the night before a test might help someone get good grades, but will they really understand thoroughly or remember the information later? It seems so pointless to take a course, do loads of work and then not learn much at all.

what's gone wrong with our schools?

I taught both elementary and high school for six years before teaching university the rest of my career. Recently, having retired, I have been supply teaching - and have been dismayed by changes I sense in the schools.

The Choking Game

A couple in our congregation have lost a wonderful grandson to the choking game.  This is creating a temporary "high" through asphyxiation, often done in small groups and, unfortunately, by some individuals on their own.  The byword is often secrecy so that adults and others never find out.  It is often called the "good kid's high" because it doesn't (usually) involve drugs or alcohol.   Too often it is seen as harmless by participants because no one is hurt.  Unfortunately, some die, too many.  Have any of you out there been involved i
