Popular song for worship

I am trying to set up a part of our service where we sing one contemporary song that touches on the divine. I thought that we could do this once per month to start with. Songs that come to mind are Munford and Sons - I will wait for you / Michael Logan - St. Christopher (On my Way) - Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah

Does anyone have any other suggestions.
Thanks

2014 Songs We're Lovin'

The old thread is taking a long time to load due to the number of videos, so I thought I'd kick off a new one for the new year.

To start off, I give you "To Love Somebody", a classic Bee Gees tune covered by Canadians Bobby Bazini and Serena Ryder. These are the two of the best young pop singers in this country and they are two great tastes that go well together.

2013 Christmas Music Thread

Time to create a soundtrack for Wondercafe's Christmas. I'm putting this in Social this year since it seems a bit livelier than Pop Culture. What are your favorite Christmas/holiday/winter songs or recordings? Anything new for this holiday season catch your eye/ear? Or just post a song of the season that you like.

My current fave band, Walk Off the Earth, released their Christmas single for 2013 this week and I love it. Nice, if somewhat different, rendition of a holiday chestnut.

Is somebody singing?

I don't think that this has been posted or discussed here yet (I remember posting in a thread about it but I think it was on another board). This is the song that astronaut Chris Hadfield co-wrote with Ed Robertson of the Barenaked Ladies. It is the first song recorded on Earth and in orbit and, beside members of BNL, features youth choir the Wexford Gleeks. In short - I love it. Bouncy, lively, and a beautiful reflection on the view of Earth from up there.

Holy Now (video embedded)

Bruce Sanguin is at my church for a conference this weekend and tonight, as part of his talk, he played this video for us. I found it to be quite moving and thought I would share it here:

TO ALL CLERGY

Somewhere stored among the surviving remnants of my life is a university song book. It was published for Mount Allison University about 1880 - a time when Mt. A was turning out Methodist clergy like canned beans, and when students would actually get together and sing. (I grew up in a home like that. I played the piano and the family and guests sang. So it rouses fond memories.)

You can see if  yours is one of the copies by looking up this song in it:

. "We are gay theology students"

My music wishlist

I spent some time this week building a wishlist on Puretracks, basically an exercise in "what do I need to buy to build my dream MP3 collection". I ended up (so far) with the following artists. I guess it's kind of my "favorite pop/rock music" list.

Yes (not everything, but a lot)

Jon & Vangelis (the two they have)

Vangelis

Leonard Cohen

The Moody Blues (mostly the sixties-eighties stuff, I wasn't crazy about their albums from the nineties and noughts)

A New Old-Fashioned Pentecost Hymn

Pentecost is this upcoming Sunday (May 27).  I always enjoy our celebration of it, especially here at Forest Hill United where we celebrate with lots of Holy Spirit hymns and communion.

New Wave Reminiscences

I was just listening to a collection of songs I liked as a kid, and on came a song with a decidedly different sound, and I recognized it as from a later period in my life than childhood. It was not yer regular 70's song, or bare rock number of the early 80's nooo.... it was a new wave song, and a sound that to me is congruous with that wonderful, terrifying and exciting blooming of awakening we call puperty.  This particular song was "If I Was" by Midge Ure...
